Coach Niumatalolo leaving for the university of Arizona?

If Coach Niumatalolo leaves for Arizona, might some Class of '22 football recruits choose to go elsewhere?

Could be...The AFA has had his # for years & now that Army has???

Doubt it. If he didn’t leave when the BYU opportunity came up I doubt he’ll be leaving anytime soon.

I am sure that Coach K receives inquiries every year....That being said, I agree with Pleber16 --passing up BYU was big.

> Who cares ? If a candidate leaves because of the football coach, what does it tell you about his commitment to serving in the Navy. A little hnt, in the Navy your Skipper will change frequently ...

I like and admire what Coach K has done for the program, and think he is a great Coach, but Navy is not a football school. I like BEATING ARMY as much as any one and the intercollegiate athletic program is an integral part of the USNA experience, , but I often question whether the success of the football program has had unintended consequences. I have heard rumblings from time to time (including USAFA, USMA, and USNA), which suggests that our priorities aren't always what they should be. (This is not a criticism of Coach K at all, he's doing his job --and by all reports he is as focused on character and team building as he is winning games).

If a football recruit were ahead of me on my MOC's slate, I might care . . .

I’m certain coach has a very clear understanding of what the USNA athleteic program is about for the academy itself as well as the players. To that end I would be willing to bet that if a kid wanted to follow him; he would have a good long discussion with that player or players. As a coach myself I know it’s something I would do. I’m only a HS coach but after 20 years of coaching and seeing kids sign to play on the pool gets small and the kids lock in to where they are going. The switch does happen but I would be surprised if it happened at the academy.

You have no control over who your competition might be. MOC can issue 10 NOM's for each opening they have, so not a lot of value in being overly focused on just one other person. That one other person may also decide to attend some other college, you just never know. Honestly, no one should choose any SA just to play sports. The recruiting incentive of free tuition/room/board isn't there at an SA, since no one pays for those things. And if your main interest is eventually being in pro sports, you still have chosen the wrong college for that path.

Most recruited Navy football players go to NAPS, so not likely to affect anyone's chances for a direct appointment. Coaches coming and going happens at every school. With no disrespect to the Navy football players, I would imagine that the talent of football being players recruited by AZ (not saying anything about intelligence, heart, drive, leadership, etc.) is probably higher across the board than that the talent being recruited by any SA. IOW, I would be surprised if most players at any SA would be starting at AZ.

That said, rumor had it that when Paul Johnson left USNA for GA Tech, he tried to encourage the (then 3/C) quarterback (think it was Ricky Dobbs but could be wrong about that) to go with him. Didn't happen.

I would think it highly unlikely that a current Mid would leave the USNA to go play football at UA, but a class of 2022 recruit might consider going elsewhere if he had no idea who his coach would be at Annapolis - if he were more focused on football than earning a commission. I know a kid who was all set to go to Navy to play football, at the last minute, he got an offer from Cal - and that is where he went.

I was looking forward to something new for next year.

Had Coach KN left, probably not much new. USNA would still run the triple option b/c that's really the only "option" (pardon the pun) for a SA. The likely coach would have been the current OC, who probably would have done things much the same way. So the man at the helm would have changed but probably not a lot more, at least in the short term.

The 3 plays in a row trying to draw army offsides sealed it for me. He has run out of innovation.

Coach Jasper is a bit distracted right now (and rightly so), which I think contributed to the lack of solid QB practice and lack of innovation this season. I kinda wish Coach J took leave to focus on his family, but I understand the need to work when you can't fix something.
