I'm sure this has been asked before, and I did search first....My DS will begin his 3rd year of Varsity Basketball, recommended for captain....Coach just left...He has known the coach for 7 years and was going to ask him for a recommendation. I know the Coach will do it if he asks him, but does it make a difference since he is technically not his coach anymore? He also has played Varsity golf for 3 years, (hopes to be there senior year) and he knows he will gladly write a letter for him, but he thought the bball coach was a better option..Any thoughts? I have just tell everyone again how much I appreciate all of you. As all of you know it is a long process...also have a guidance counselor that is not helpful or knowledgeable .

Is this regarding a nom or for an SA application? If for an SA, which one?

I actully have the same problem my track coach is leaving this year and I was supposed to be captain but instead he said he is leaving it up to the new coach which made me really mad at him and I understand what he is going through he probably wants to play basketball for the academy I wish I had a suggestion but Im in the same boat, if he found his coach to really be nice to him and he had a good connection than I dont see why he should not ask him or if he does alot of volunteering or something else outside of school maybe ask whos in charge of that the idea is to get someone who knows you outside of the classroom at something you work hard at.

He was planning to use the recommendation for both. He is applying to the USAFA and the USNA. ( The USNA being his first choice, but would be beyond honored to attend the USAFA. He has been told based on our location the USAFA would be a greater chance for him. (that is not why he is applying though, serving has been his dream since he was 9 and stepped on the grounds of the USNA). I apologize if I am all over the place in my response..too many things running through my head right now.

I wish you all the best..my son was very upset and still is..it was more than coach and player, they were friends.. He understands the chance for an opportunity for the coach came along, but he really hoped to finish after all these years together. He doesn't wan t to play...He is good, not D1 good, and I say that with love.

If he isn't good enough to be recruited as a D1 athlete, I doubt the coach's recommendation would be any more helpful then recommendations from others who also know him well. There is no reason he has to currently be his coach to write a letter of recommendation. Each SA & MOC lists the expected recommendations and provides guidance about the optional ones. That is where I would start.

Totally agree with this!

DS had a better relationship with his JV coach than his varsity coach. All of his recommendations were done by the JV coach.

Is this a sport where kids send videos of their performances? Sometimes those speak louder than words.

Ask the old coach, for sure.
