Coast Guard AIM

I am an athlete but really girly..

I saw many young women at R-day yesterday, all seemed to be handling everything the cadre threw at them with no more problems than any of the guys.

Hello everyone! This is 1st post. I found this site thru google and been reading quite a bit of the threads just to get a feel of the crowd here. I liked it so I signed up.

My son is all set to go to his AIM camp on the week of July 20th. He's all pumped up! Heck, I'm pumped up for him as well! He had a tough time choosing between the summer camps for USAF and USCGA but eventually chose the USCGA. He's not made up his mind yet if the military academy is the route he'll be taking after high school but I'm sure the experience at AIM will be a huge deciding factor. He's a great kid, disciplined (most of the time), a scholar and an athlete, and had always done well in a structured environment. I'm sure if he decides to pursue an appoinment at the USCGA and gets accepted, he'll be just fine.

I'm just curios if anyone here knows what the percentage is of the kids who attend the AIM program actually apply and get accepted to the academy?

According to USCGA admissions, around 50% of AIM grads earn appointments to the Academy.

Also take into account that AIM is not especially easy to get into. If you can make it to AIM you are in general probably a good applicant anyway.

That's my personal feeling though, I am in no way attached to AIM, nor did I go through AIM.

Yes, good point.

From the website: "Success at AIM is a good indicator of success at the Coast Guard Academy."

And contrary to popular rumor, AIM selection is not a random lottery. USCGA admissions carefully examine every applicantion to AIM before deciding to offer a slot or not.

cool! thanks for the info.

yeah, i was thinking along those lines. i figured since he got selected from among thousands of applicants? his chances for an appoinment should be pretty good.... assuming his experience at AIM is a successful one. i'm sure it won't be easy and all fun but there should be no reason why it wouldn't be.

if he does earn an appoinment, i'm confident that he'll be ready for the physical part of the program. he's been an athlete all his life and used to the rigors of physical training. the academics will be a tougher challenge, i'm sure and he's really looking forward to that. :thumb:

thanks guys!

Speaking on the engineering projects what does that consist of? Building projects? Have not seen much info on this.

I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise of what you'll encounter.

You'll enjoy it, that's all I'll say. :thumb:

I'm getting excited and nervous! i leave on sunday! anyone else going that session? catching up on as much sleep and air conditioning as i can!

Been a little busy at work. Last weekend I was in CT and stopped in for the AIM graduation. I knew someone who was graduating.

Things seem to be going well. The AIMster had a few funny stories, like making the mistake of turning into the Swab Summer area (not a good idea for anyone, AIMsters are no different). Seems like the kids had a good time.

Good luck at AIM. Remember, it may be tough at the beginning, but you'll have fun in the end. Those AIM cadre have fun too (and I'm not talking about scary fun, I mean they enjoy the enxperience of training high schoolers and getting them interested in the Coast Guard.)

The Swabs seemed to be doing well too, from the very brief period I saw them. Those Swab Summer noises brought back some memories.

Good luck with AIM!

Well, I dropped off my son at the airport early this morning. He's off to his AIM camp. He was a little nervous but was really pumped up! He's been looking forward to it. Physically and mentally, he's about as prepared as he can get but I'm sure there'll be plenty of surprises. The experience will be one to remember the rest of his life. The very next day he comes home, he's off for another camp. This time it's with NASA's HAS summer camp for high school juniors with engineering careers in mind. ---> http://aerospacescholars.jsc.nasa.gov/HAS/index.cfm
It'll be the complete opposite environment from the AIM camp but I'm sure he'll love that as well. The experiences from both camps will play a huge role in his decision which route he will take after high school. Another huge factor will be is, if he has a good chance of continuing to play baseball at the USCGA, he would probably lean that way. I hope he gets a chance to visit with the baseball coaches while at AIM.

My daughter attended Week 1 of AIM and came home loving it... it is still all she can talk about.....

Success at AIM is a good predictor of admission to the Academy. I wish your daughter well in her quest.

My son attended the last week of AIM camp for this summer. He's still raving about it!

every once in a while an aimster would wander into our p-way... word to the wise: if you're an AIMster, don't wander into swab areas. Our cadre liked to scare them pretty bad. it was funny for us but didn't look so great for them. I've got to give them credit though, most of them caught on pretty quickly to everything.
