Coast Guard Cutter Eagle to depart on 75th anniversary voyage

Eagle is currently riding out a storm off the coast of St Johns Newfoundland (high winds and 15 ft seas), and is scheduled for an on-time arrival in Halifax NS next Friday 15 July.

Eagle has departed Halifax, the last foreign port of call on the 2011 summer cruise, and is headed for Boston USA - set to arrive Friday 22 July at 0900.

We live in the Boston area and DS was invited for a 90 minute admissions briefing and tour of the Eagle this weekend. The briefing was conducted by an admissions officer and the tour was given by a cadet who had just finished his first year. There were two groups of twelve students, each with a guest. Very good admissions briefing and very good tour. The cadet gave some good advice I think is worth passing on. His biggest challenges were: (1) not taking things personally - he came to realize that he was treated as he was because he was a swab and then a new cadet, not because anyone had it out for him; (2) time management is critical; (3) that said, he had a hard time relaxing when he had free time; and (4) he wished he had engaged with his professors earlier on. He said that the professors are very willing to help. He related the story of calling a professor at 10:30 one night for help with an assignment and the professor met him that night to help him. While I don't know which he did, he said that he thinks the "cadet for a day" otherwise known as "beansprout" visit is more helpful than AIM for getting a taste of the Academy. He said that AIM gives one a taste of what Swab summer is like, but visiting the school and staying overnight gives one a much better sense of what it is like to be a cadet there. He was very happy to have his first year done, but also very upbeat about the academy and has no regrets about attending there.

Tracking Eagle

Luigi59,

Our Swab is currently sailing on the Eagle enroute to NYC. As excited parents we want to follow (track) the Eagle as it travels south from New Bedford to NYC. Question: How do you read the time on sailwx.info? Looks like the Eagle left New Bedford on 1 Aug 11 at 1630 UTC. What time would that be?

Thank you

I believe UTC is plus four hours, thus it would be 12:30 when she set said. Admiral correct me if I am in error.

Thank you Boss51. Makes sense to even an old enlisted Army Reservist.

Congrats, I'm sure she is having a great time!

While saliwx works, try this site: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?mmsi=303990000

(You have to then click on "Current Vessel's Track")

Looks like she is just doing zig-zags about 50 NM SE of Montauk, waiting to move into NY Harbor on Friday.

Tracking Eagle

Thanks Boss51 and Luigi59 for your assistance in tracking the Eagle. Looks like the Eagle is off the coast of S. Jersey and headed North to NYC. Wish I could be there when the Eagle passes the Statue of Liberty. What a sight for our Swabs to see! I suppose they will begin to appreciate what it means/sacrifices it takes to protect the freedoms of our country.

My Swab phoned while they had liberty last weekend to say that Eagle has been given special permission top anchor under The Statue of Liberty for the night. I hope he remembers to take pictures.

Lunch with Secretary Napolitano

My swab who is currently aboard Eagle just texted to say that he had lunch with Secretary Janet Napolitano. She is touring Eagle and requested to lunch with the crew. What a fantastic experience for our young people!
