Has anyone gotten an appointment to the CGAS program for Early Action? If so, how do we normally find out which prep school we have been chosen for?

CGAS appointments are given for early action applicants. I don't know of any offered yet for this year. If you are accepted into CGAS you will not find your prep school assignment until May. However, football and lacrosse recruits often end up at NAPS in order to participate with Naval Academy Prep teams.

DS is currently in the scholars program and is attending MMI. He applied EA last year. Personally I think it’s a great program, an extra year of experience.

I am trying to get some more details in regards to the CGAS program. DD applied EA and is a recruited athlete. Her application has been completed since 9/19 so most likely has been reviewed already but nothing in BD yet. Coach just reached out inquiring if she would accept the CGAS program if offered. Did a little research and it appears that GCA is the only CGAS prep school that has a womens soccer team so I would imagine she would be sent there by default? I also see that previous threads indicate you have to accept the CGAS offer by Feb 1st? If so is it binding? Say she gained a full appointment into West Point/USNA after accepting and wanted to change her mind could she? CGA has been her first choice since AIM but she also loved West Point (has LOE) and the added year although would help anyone may lean her towards West Point if offered a full appointment.

For a recruited athlete, yes, they will go to the prep school that has the appropriate team. Can't answer the rest of the questions - sounds like a discussion to have with your AO - if your daughter gets a full appointment from a different academy, I'd hate to think they would stand in her way after wanting her attend the scholars program, indicating some hesitance on their part that she would thrive academically.

DS received a CGAS appointment last year and is currently at MMI. USCGA was his #1 choice and he heard early in November last year he’d been selected for the scholars program. He had applied at USNA and USAFA but he decided to withdraw those applications and move forward with the prep offer. It’s been a good thing and I see it as better than if he’d received a direct appointment. They receive pay while in the program and it’s a year to improve in areas and arrive at the academy with a bit more experience.

I am not sure who is part of the sorting hat this year for which prep school one will go to. Each prep school will have an x amount of prepsters slotted in. There are many who do not go to NAPS and still play football and lax at the other schools. Each school is geared for the best success for the prepster. There is a pretty good thread that explained the differences of the prep schools.

It is not uncommon for a prepster not to play a sport at MMI and GMC even though it may be offered there. Some coaches will suggest not to. Don’t take it wrong but you are a big investment and CGA wants a return on its investment. As a parent it’s like another year of bubble wrap. A prepster will strength condition train meet the academic requirements and keep their nose clean for the year at prep school.

Any appointment whether it be a direct or CGAS is not binding. Every year people don’t show up on Day 1 or CGAS day. But keep in mind people who are 100% sure and would take CGAS in a blink of an eye may be at the back of line waiting to be called up from the wait list. So if one holds on to an appointment for a direct through th first week of June or last week of June for CGAS for non real reason, you essentially block someone out of a direct appointment or CGAS.

FYI Sometimes people from CGAS get bumped up to a direct appointment. Now all this info is for CGA I don’t know whether the other SA have a wait list system. When you get placed on the wait list your appointment will be based on the needs of the academy.

My DS was a recruited athlete last year. The coaches told us to apply regular action and submit our application mid November. He too received a call from one of his coaches sometime in January asking if he would accept a Scholars appointment if given. He said yes. While still holding out for a direct appointment. He was called by the football coach beginning of March and told he was being given a conditional Scholars appointment (still waiting for medical to clear) and he had till April 1 to accept or decline. We too had no clue what the Scholars program was, we asked a lot of questions and did a lot of research and determined that it was a win win for our son. The Scholars program is referred to as a golden ticket. One year that gives your child an opportunity to grow academically, physically and mentally. Playing sports does not affect NCAA regulations, its a free year. They get paid as an E2 and majority of them are given the leadership positions during swab summer. This year there was 71 Scholars divided up 20 NAPs, 30 MMI, 21 GMC. My son found out he was going to NAPs ended of May. All the Scholars reported to the CGA July 17 for their indoc period before they were divided up and sent to their perspective prep schools for the academic year.

Did not even think about this but it makes perfect sense. Thanks all for the feedback!

DS received an offer of appointment to Coast Guard Academy Scholars (CGAS) Program last night. Wrestling Coach called with the news and an email with official appointment to CGAS arrived today. DS will likely attend NAPS to continue wrestling while in the Scholars Program. Cadets have until May 1st, 2018 to accept or decline.

DS also received two nominations for the USNA and they have requested fall 2017 transcripts be filed at the conclusion of the semester.

Now we wait and pray our DS makes the right decision for his future.

Hopeful news - DS phoned by admissions officer and offered spot on the waitlist for the prep school. Maybe he'll move up the waitlist and get to attend CGAS!!

DS was just notified by his Coach is on the wait list for the CGAS. - Gosh, this is so tough!

Any thoughts on timeline and chances of appointment?
Hang in there! I remember last year it seemed that appointees had until the beginning of March to accept or decline.

Hi!
I applied at the end of EA and just got my CGAS conditional appointment last night. (Waiting on DODMERB)

I'm so excited! Female not a recruited athlete.
Congratulations! Were you notified by phone call, email or just Bear's den?
