Coast Guard Watch opens fire on shark to protect crew in the water

A handful of US Coast Guard members had a close encounter with a shark during a dip in the ocean earlier this week.

I never had a swim call while at sea but heard that posting "shark watch" was a thing. Interesting video.

I was surprised at the relative closeness of the firing to the swimmers - an added dimension for the marksman.

Props to the Coast Guard for the inflatable unicorn!

I love the Coast Guard. They obviously know how to do Steel Beach.

Never had a shark show up for swim call, but we did have one show up before or after (a whale shark, it was amazing). We had a remora show up at a call and that freaked some people out because they thought it was a tiny shark (and remoras aren't shy). Also, we were conducting a man overboard drill with a rescue swimmer pickup and just before our swimmer jumped in a shark popped up and circled the dummy... needless to say.... we switched to a shipboard pickup. That was pretty wild though. We were pretty far off and to have a shark just pop up like that.
