Exercise Cobra Gold should be on everybody's bucket list.

"Cutting the heads off cobras and pouring their blood into the mouths of Marines doesn’t sit well with at least two constituencies, cobras and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals."

"In his letter, Gala suggested the Marines turn to other training options, including interactive video games and virtual reality that survival experts use to train Air Force pilots."

“There are also vegan options too with the jungle being rich in fruit and other lush, edible vegetation,” he wrote.

Son #1 was involved in the planning of the Cobra Gold exercise when he was at Kunsan a few years ago. After he travelled to Thailand a couple of times for conferences and meetings, the US participation that year was cut in protest of the coup in that country. He was disappointed in not being able to participate, but that is the way things go sometimes.

My son was supposed to be the S-3A (current ops) on the 31st MEU which is currently deployed there. Right before he chopped over for workups they told him he had to give somebody else a chance to do something so he ended up at 29 Palms. What a deal.

I was there one year when monsoon came early. It rained so much I'm still wet. The professionalism and technical and tactical expertise of the Royal Thai and ROK Marines is remarkable. We truly have well qualified partners in that AOR.

When I was at NKP I made some friends in a Thai Commando unit. They graciously invited me to partake of their hospitality at their club on the banks of the Mekong. They were nice enough to pay for my SamLo ride home and delivered me without military police involvement (No status of forces agreement). They are some tough guys and used to cross the river into Laos to scout the Ho Chi Mihn Trail. Brought me back some Laotian Kip for souvenirs. Nothing like Singhai Beer and Mekong Whisky. If I remember correctly Mekong has formaldehyde as a preservative so I still have that going for me. Nothing like three months of solid rain. From Hootch to OPS we tied our boots and socks around our necks under the poncho and wore flip flops.

"There are also vegan options too with the jungle being rich in fruit and other lush, edible vegetation,” not sure why this made me giggle.
Me too. No surprise that PITA recommends a meatless diet I guess.

@AF6872 very cool experience. These times can't be bought and is a huge reason I stayed 26 years.

Up to about 50 we are all immortal. My first assignment in Thailand was on a remote site on the Cambodian border. We received an extra $100 a month as a very remote site. When we closed down I was sent to NKP but they kept giving me the extra bucks. Rented a house in downtown NKP with the extra money for off duty time. Last duty was instructor at Keesler but they kept giving me that extra. I think the statute of limitations is up so I don't have to give it back. When I rotated back from SEA the radio and TV was filled with all these stories about the "Secret War". I didn't know it was so secret. Shadows, Spooky, A1E's, Sandy's, Jolly Greens, Wild Weasels, O-1s, O-2s, Puff's and Buff's in the air 24/7. How was this secret? One of the deuce&1/2s was going up the mountain one day on a shift change and ran over a snake on the two lane road, It was so big they thought it was a Python, They tracked the snake into the bush and found out it was a King (dead thank heaven). They draped it over the door to the Commanders Quarters. Welcome to the morning. The Major loved it.
