Coffee machines

If you want to make a good impression as a cadet, you should show up to your ship with at least 5# of some decent coffee to share.
This sounds like a great way to earn the nickname "Bilge Pump"!

First two questions I received upon walking on my first ship as an engine cadet. "Can you weld and can you make coffee?". As long as you can make good coffee you will be OK. Know before you go.
Most accurate reply on the thread. My first Chief told me very solemnly, "Cadet, I am about to show you the most important thing that I can teach you." He took me to the coffee pot in the control room and went over how to do it in great detail. I also did a lot of welding and lathe operation.

Caffeine is a rarity at KP. I saw very few people drink it.
Well....according to my 2024 midshipmen - this statement is not true at KP - at the present time anyway. Maybe was that way in the past, but not anymore. Lots of energy drinks and coffee being consumed by those who have the rates.

Back in the dark ages prior to Keurigs and Red Bull, it was Copenhagen and bottle soda.

It's funny but you would think there would have been giant coffee urns somewhere on campus with 24/7 access. Other than the coffee machine on zero deck which wasn't installed until about half way through my time the only other place to get coffee on campus I recall was the seafarer.

I don't really recall having access to coffee other than Delano or in the wardroom during First Class Year. But it was a long time ago. And there was the soda machine in the foyer with lots of Co'Cola. . . .
