I am essentially a caffeine addict due to the hours that I work, and was wondering if you are able to have coffee machines in dorms or in common areas? I know some schools consider some appliances fire hazards and was wondering if you are allowed to have one at KP?

So you will be working there? As in getting a job?

No, sorry for the confusion. I currently work opening shift on weekends and closing on some weekdays currently at a restaurant, and drink a lot of coffee. I have been working there for around 16 months, and am addicted to caffeine at this point. I am an applicant for class of 2026, and was wondering if coffee machines are allowed in dorms.

Oh, now I understand.

Not in your room as a plebe, but you have access. Plebes do earn "coffee rates" but the requirement seems to vary. It is my understanding that all plebes have them right now. It does sound as if it is not all that complicated to get coffee.

Coffee in your room as a plebe d pends on what company you are in and your company leadership. Definitely okay after recognition, but not always before that.

If coffee is allowed, consider getting a Toddy cold brew system. Then all you need is a microwave or small electric kettle (if allowed) to heat up water.

I'm here right now. Once you get rates that allow you to drink and have caffeine, there are communal k-cup machines on each deck of each company that plebes are allowed to use. Eventually, you will be allowed to have your own machine in your room if you want (after recognition), but there is really no point since you are 20 steps away from a machine anyway.

Almost all will come back from sea drinking coffee as that is the easiest beverage to find aboard ship. With the long hours worked plus sea projects during sea year, coffee is a big help. If you want to make a good impression as a cadet, you should show up to your ship with at least 5# of some decent coffee to share.

With your caffeine addiction, you'll be a good fit in the US Merchant Marine; especially if you can brew a good pot of coffee..☕ and if you don't know how to, it's one of the first things ships officers will teach you as a new cadet..👍
Caffeine is a rarity at KP. I saw very few people drink it.
Fatigue might change that once you get out and start working.. It got me through some very long and weary days back when I was sailing Mate, that's for sure..

How did my plebe survive Covid plebe summer at USNA with zero access to coffee at will??????

Teen-aged systems are different from that of more "seasoned" folks.

I never drank coffee until a couple of years after my time on Active Duty and I certainly had many periods with very little sleep and lots of night watches.

First two questions I received upon walking on my first ship as an engine cadet. "Can you weld and can you make coffee?". As long as you can make good coffee you will be OK. Know before you go.

I recall being asked to head up a few minutes before Coffee Time to make a pot. . . . oh, and lots of welding, too. . .
