My son called me last week to tell me he was awarded a 4 year Type 1 scholarship for AFROTC! Yes, he is 1 month into his freshman year of college, and he was awarded this scholarship!

He sat as alternate status for the scholarship for several months during his senior year of high school and ultimately received notice around March that he did not receive the scholarship. He decided to go ahead and join AFROTC at a college not too far from home. The detachment offered to help with some of his housing costs, so he decided to go there. His focus was then on working toward getting a 3 year scholarship, and if that didn’t happen, well, at least there was a 2 year scholarship he would get as long as he was showing a commitment to AFROTC and doing well with academics/grades. He wants a military career, so he wanted to join AFROTC regardless of scholarship status.

He was told a board met recently to look at the alternate candidates and award scholarships. We aren’t really sure why he was offered a scholarship at this point, but we’ll gladly take it!

He has been loving the ROTC experience. His school has a very small AFROTC program, and I think that suits him well.

This post is really just because I am THRILLED for him, and most people in my life have no idea how crazy and exciting this is! I’m still a bit shocked that this is happening!

Congrats - just a small point is that the 2 year scholarship is only for those invited to continue on in training - it is not automatic for everyone in the program- there are some who show a commitment and have excellent grades, and yet are not invited and their journey toward commissioning and serving as an officer through AFROTC ends there. Needs of the air force - a couple of years ago it was brutal and the Air Force ultimately back-tracked on some of the cuts. But cuts continue in that program. Same guidance follows for your son and others now on longer scholarships .If they are not invited to move forward after 2 years, then their journey and scholarship may end.

In my experience what you are describing of a 4 year type 1 being awarded so soon into your ICSP window is exceptionally rare, and speaks so well for your son - congratulations on his four year type 1 scholarship! He should meet with the school to explore what if any merit scholarships, other internal/ external scholarships, or financial aid can be applied toward any remaining fees (remaining room and board).

Great story of commitment and persistence….2 essential characteristics of a leader.

All true. Anecdotally, though, I think a good number of the AFROTC cadets from a couple years ago were able to switch over to Army ROTC if they wanted. Don't know about scholarships thereafter, but I know it happened. So that's always an opportunity to explore for otherwise motivated AFROTC cadets who get squeezed out.

Good point about the 2 year scholarship. The person we spoke with over the summer made it sound like anyone who was showing a commitment and doing what they needed to do for ROTC and academics in that detachment would get the 2 year scholarship. It’s possible I heard what I wanted to hear though. Lol.
