On the USNA website it lists that college freshmen should take Calculus, English, Chemistry, History and Physics if possible first semester. This presents a problem. I received a 4 on my AP Calculus AB exam and a 4 on my English Literature and Composition exam. This translates into receiving credit for a semester of Calculus and two semesters of English at VMI. I will be able to take second semester Calculus this fall but I have already received credit for the two required semesters of English so I currently cannot register for an English class. Also, my adviser said that freshmen typically do not take Chemistry, and it is very unlikely (yet possible) that an exception will be made. Should I go outside my Civil Engineering curriculum and try to get an English course? Also, how should I handle the Chemistry situation? Thank you!

It seems pretty simple to me. Take the next level calc. take an english class. Also Take chemistry.

IMO..The only valid excuse for not taking a plebe course is that it isnt offered at your school...

My advisor told me that I couldnt take more than 5 classes a semester and told me that it was "unlikely" that I could get permission to take more. I eventually got permission to take classes from the dean of my college.'

if you want to go to USNA then you do what you have to do.

I find it hard to believe that you can't take an English course. If you can't, take a history course. World history is good. If you can't take Chem, take Physics. If you've validated 2 semesters of Calc, take Calc III.

I am reapplying to the Naval Academy and At my college I am taking

Naval Science 2 cr
Calculus 4 cr
Chemistry 4 cr
English 3 cr
Italian ( required to take a foreign language) 4 cr

17 total credits

Should I try and take physics and a history class next semester?

Those classes are fine. Now be sure to get As (or, at worst, Bs) in them -- especially Calc and Chem.

When you say "next semester," I assume you mean 2nd semester. What you take second semester is irrelevant to whether you'll receive an appointment b/c those grades won't be in before USNA makes a decision. They are relevant to being able to validate courses at USNA once you're there.
