College insight/guidance for ROTC applicants

I believe my knowledge in branch, major and career choice is more important than the school I attended which I've only seen mentioned on these boards once.

While this may be true, it still doesn't address the stated purpose of this thread by the OP. Many parents and other posters on this site have either current military experience or prior military experience (including ROTC) that could make the same claim. Why the reluctance to post your college as all the other posters who have responded have done?

Aglahad you want to kepp your school private. I respect it. However, Agagles has a point.

I made this thread for candidates to use the list as a tool. You are commissioned, seriously you are in the Ocean now, not a sea, pool or lake. This site is so small if anyone on here was at your college they already know it.

Agagles, I understand their desire to want to assist from the nursing aspect as an AROTC cadet.

You BOTH are right regarding your position. Let's not divert this thread into a contest. Aglahad wants to be anonymous. Their choice. Agagles is pointing out that school connection can be just as important as the major.

Candidates right now matter most. I am the OP, and I respect both of you, but the priority is the candidates. Candidates are looking at branches, majors, and colleges. The more you share, the more they can get guidance/direction.

I don't. Why keep your school private and if for some reason you do feel the need then why post on a thread titled "College insight/guidance for ROTC applicants" that has the stated purpose of:

How are posters that are considering Aglahad's college suppose to know that he has any knowledge of that school/Battalion if he doesn't list it?

Agreed....which is why I chose to respond and why I question the need for anyone on this "list" to expect/request more anonymity than the rest of us.
 
Not really sure listing the school is that important, most applicants that are looking for advice tend to start out with "I want to go to xyz school, anyone have any advice" Anyone that attended that school usually jumps into the conversation. What started out as a nice source of reference has sidetracked to a point that nobody else seems much interested in adding their information. This will most likely just get lost in the back pages of the forum. I guess I'm just as guilty since I didn't list my son's Majors.

Important or not.....the OP did request this information. Certainly if you don't feel it is important then I'm sure you can choose not to provide the information.

Ooooops....seems it wasn't a problem for you when you originally responded. However you did overlook providing your children's majors. Maybe it's an AROTC thing.
 
In hindsight I would not have listed the college either but it was too late to edit.

You really need to give this up, there is plenty of information for applicants to receive, it's worked just fine for years on the board even without this last thread. The information is nice but not required, applicants will find the information they need.

Continuing an argument over whether someone listed their college or not just makes this another laughable thread that will soon get buried.

And no, it's not an AROTC thing, it's a respect thing for my "Children" who asked that I not list their majors, they would have preferred I not list the school but that was my mistake.

I am with you on this one. I have intentionally not posted my information in this thread specifically because with my user name, that would be enough information to specifically identify my daughter, something I'd rather not do (and she appreciates that).

That being said, I do reach out to any member mentioning any of the schools in my daughters BN or the BN affiliated with the institution that I am affiliated with (also not publicly posted because of a breadcrumb trail to my daughter). I also reach out to hockey parents whose kids are considering ROTC here because of my experience with that issue.

And the point of this thread is to develop a place for prospective cadets/parents to reach out. I get it. However, there are limits to how many breadcrumbs any member should be putting out there to protect our family interests. For those of us who have left plenty of breadcrumbs (like my user name), please give us some slack.

BTW, if someone posts information here that adds breadcrumbs to my daughter's identity, I will ask the Mods to edit/delete that information. I suggest the same for other members who wish to protect their child's identity. Unfortunately, this world has far too many people with problems who will use this information in bad ways.

Many of us that have been on this site for a number of years remember when your daughter was going through the ROTC process and already know more about her than you probably want posted again...and of course I would not post that information. I would assume/hope that despite us having that knowledge that no one has used this information in any "bad ways". Certainly my daughter has survived the revealing of her school/class/major and branch affiliation during the last three years without a problem.

That said....I disagree (mostly) with the last sentence of the above quote. IMHO....our children will not be put in anymore danger by posting information on this thread than they currently are as college students/athletes. While it's prudent to be cautious there is a point when it's no longer being cautious and just becomes paranoia or an excuse for not doing something. Again JMPO...and I realize that you disagree and need to do what you think is best for your family.

I am at BOLC right now so my postings may be few and far between. My reluctance to post school, unit, location etc is because I could easily be identified and we all know social media can adversely effect someones career. If I say something the wrong person disagrees with and they identify me that is a lose lose situation. The Army really isn't as big as many think.

I am also the only current officer (Excluding ROOs) who posted and I would say I have a bit more at stake than a cadet or parent.

But I digress, if the information provided isn't enough to help prospects I might as well not post anymore at all. I am sure I could easily fill the time with something else.
Still baffled why you are pressing the issue with such zeal when it is really inconsequential.

That's all I have to say, now back to training...

And I have difficulty with a poster who is intentionally hijacking a thread because someone else's post doesn't meet their standards. The poster has posted the information they feel comfortable giving. Repeated critical postings about another's participation in a thread borders on harrassment. I would STRONGLY SUGGEST that posters on here refrain from any more postings about each other. This thread was supposed to provide folks with a reference to contact other posters with specific questions. If they don't see the information that they are looking for on here- they just won't contact that person. It's not the call of individual members to decide if another's post is acceptable or not. So Stop critiquing each other's posts.
