So, for college re-applicants who have been appointed . . . do second semester grades matter? Does continuing the current semester matter? Our son is a plebe to be and will definitely be finishing his second semester, but I know he's having a hard time focusing.

Yes (to a point) to the first and ABSOLUTELY yes to the second. USNA will almost certainly request the second semester transcript. If the candidate has dropped out of college, that could lead to USNA rescinding the appointment. Seriously. If someone can't stay focused enough to stay in school, how will he /she ever stay focused enough to get through USNA and stay focused when in the Fleet?

As for grades . . . if a student has been earning As and Bs in h.s. and first semester and the second semester grades are Bs and Cs (mostly Bs) . . . not great, but it happens. If final grades are mostly Cs, Ds, or worse . . . that will be noticed. How much of an effect will depend on how bad the grades are. Per the above, USNA doesn't want slackers -- they want people who push hard and push to the end, even when it may not "count" or be particularly important.

DS needs to think about himself and his future. What type of person does he want to be and how will that person stand up to what the military expects of him? How will he motivate others when he can't motivate himself?

Agreed completely, and the question was far more hypothetical than based on actual events. My understanding is that he is doing well and, perhaps most importantly, using this semester to learn. I was just curious as how USNA treats it. Thank you for the clarification.

@aidanrockne Our DS is a college reapplicant as well. He was so excited we he received his Appointment, I doubt he was very productive for a few days. But our DSs didn’t get where they are by being slackers. I know they will finish this semester strong.
Completely agree. Our DS hasn’t missed a class or an assignment (or so he says), and has actually told me to stop bugging him about the Naval Academy because he has work to be done at his current school. When I go back and look at reality vs. what I posted, I think I am the one who has lost focus, and he is actually just fine!

My spring semester transcript was never requested, but I still second the above advice of doing your best for the following reasons:

1. There’s always the what-if. Maybe this year they decide to start asking for spring grades.
2. You may decide to apply to grad school one day and they will likely request transcripts from all colleges attended.
3. Doing well may help you validate some classes at USNA. One of my electives happened to be offered at the Academy, and so I simply emailed the department chair and asked her to allow me to validate it for credit. Upon receipt of transcript (earned an A in the course) she decided to let me validate. One less class I need to take.
4. You (or somebody) is paying for that class. Why not try to learn as much as possible from it?
