Hi,

I had some good grades in high school (3.9 GPA at one of the toughest private schools in the country) and a decent SAT (1380; 740 Math and 640 Verbal). My grades are good, but it ranks in the bottom 50% of my graduating class since everyone from my school goes to Ivy League schools. What would be a good college GPA that the AFA looks for and what comparison would there be to a high school GPA. Would a 3.4 be the equivalent of like a 4.o in high school?

I also have been working extremely hard on getting nominations, CFA, and improving essays.

Hypothetically,

If I was to get a 3.2 or 3.3 GPA in college while taking Microeconomics, Calc III (200 level course), Computer Science, and a required writing class while also getting the following numbers on my CFA and 1 or 2 nominations, while playing 2 sports in college along with being a member of student government, what sort of chance would I have of getting in?

P.S. I received a TWE last year

Pull Ups: 18
Shuttle Run:8.0
Basketball Throw: 85
Sit-Ups: 80
Push Ups: 75
Mile Run: 5:40

My numbers from last year:

Pull Ups: 15
Shuttle Run: 8.1
Basketball Throw: 78
Sit Ups:80
Push Ups: 65
Mile Run: 5:53
(Essays were not very strong)

I'm applying this year, but as many people say on the forum, nobody knows what your chances are due to slating within your district. As long as you make stronger essays and give ti your all, you're putting your best package forward and that's all you can do.

I completely agree. It is so unpredictable, but do you know what good college GPA is or what to shoot for?

I would say give it your 100% and then some. The best GPA you are capable of earning. Good luck to you!

No one can say because the GPA alone doesn't mean much. They also look at the school profile and refigure their own GPA for you. Standing in class and SAT scores are better indicators for them.

I applaud your determination to reapply and, usually, so does the Academy. Do your best and don't let the numbers get to you. Your numbers look good, so take a look at your total application and ask your ALO what your weakest link is and go from there. My DS's was involvement and leadership, he focused on that (while maintaining an excellent college GPA). It was a bitter pill to swallow when he received the TWE but it has proven to be a blessing in disguise (USAFA 2023!). He is more prepared, more disciplined and manages his time very well. One year can make a world of difference. Best of luck to you!

I think the OP is asking about college GPA. I would suggest that the minimum needs to be a 3.o but it is a sliding scale.

Remember the process is fairly objective. Your academic score is still calculated using your high school performance and the extra semester of college will add a boost to it.

Your class ranking is on the low side so you will need higher GPA in college to offset that number. You could also look at retaking your SAT to boost the number as well.

In my opinion, CFA is really a pass/fail exercise. If you are above the averages in all events, your time can be better spent improving other areas. It is weighted the lowest. The stats you posted would have little impacted on improving your overall WCS.

The best advice is to do the best you can and let the chips fall where they may but do not think that if you do not get a 4.0 you do not have a chance.

I know this is an old thread, but curious if they also look at the school profile for colleges and modify GPA. I just wonder because taking a calculus or physics at a junior college compared to the same weed out classes at a top IVY league/prestigious school is definitely not the same.
