I was recently informed that I am on the “Color Vision List.” It is my understanding that this list is for candidates who need a waiver for color vision deficiency and that only 2% of the class can receive a waiver for this. Does anyone have any other information(such as how many people are normally on this list, etc.) or any experience with this? Thanks!

My son is colorblind and received a waiver from USNA. During I Day, I was told there were 14 waivers granted.

My son has a plebe in his company that also got the colorblind waiver. Both had LOAs.

I knew @A1Janitor would pop up with good info.

You also have to be aware if you are offered an appointment, you will be officially informed at some point exactly which career paths are closed to you, what will possibly be open. If you have your heart set on Navy or Marine wings of gold, that door is likely to be closed. On the other hand, your heart might be overjoyed to know Intel or Cyber or Supply Corps (the business folks of the Navy) or something else might be open to you. If you are of the mindset “I will thrive where I am planted,” then you will do well in life.

Keep us posted!

Capt MJ is right. After the waiver was approved, he had to sign an agreement acknowledging that many of the careers are closed to him and he will accept a career with the marines if directed.

We were told that waivers were required for the other SA too - and the Army and AF are easier to obtain than USNA. I have no direct knowledge of this because my son only applied to USNA.

I was also told USMMA will never give the waiver.

At CVW at USNA I was told by admissions that if he didn’t get it the first year, it didn’t mean he wouldn’t the second year. It is based on their needs how many are given.

It was another hurdle my son had to overcome that most don’t. He got lucky.

If you are in the list, that is a good sign. What matters is how many are on the list that need it. If we are to assume the percentages of colorblind in general - there are probably about 150 total 3q applicants that are colorblind.

My son was one of the apparently 14 who received a color blind waiver for the class of 2023. However, he did not receive an LOA, but did go through the Foundation program. Luckily, the waiver just transferred from 1 year to the next (phew). Originally, my son wanted to be a Navy Diver but that got squashed. He was a little bummed but continued to pursue the Academy route. Now, he is looking at Intelligence or METOC.

Signing the letter saying he must accept Marines if that's the only choice was the toughest part (not that he has anything against Marines). He had a good conversation with the recently retired Capt. Wallace (he was the head of the Foundation program) and Capt. Wallace said that yes, there is a chance you may end up Marines but, he has yet to see it happen. So, my son signed and is currently "enjoying" his Academy Plebe year.
