I have heard from several different sources that it is a good idea to purchase combat boots ahead of time to break them in before BCT. Is there a specific type that we need to get as far as brand or style in order to go with the uniform and be acceptable to wear during BCT.

From the December 2010 parents newsletter

BOOTS FOR APPOINTEES

The rules are changing for the Class of 2015. The current boots need no break-in time like the previous solid leather boots so there is no advantage in getting the boots in advance. The cadets will no longer be issued a credit if the boots are purchased in advance. If you have questions please contact Richard Roberts at 719–333-3288 or e-mail him at richard.roberts@usafa.edu.

If you are still curious there is a recent thread where the boot model is given.

Don't need them

The only shoes our son had on I Day were the running shoes on his feet and a pair of cleats in his bag. He said he had no trouble with the boots that were issued.

From another parent newsletter:

BOOT ISSUE FOR APPOINTEES

According to Boot Issue, the Academy is no longer supporting the purchase
of boots in advance. The main reasons for no longer getting boots in
advance are:

1. There is no break in period needed for the new boots.
2. The USAFA is funded for two pair of boots for each incoming
appointee. If an appointee shows up with any other boots, they will be
instructed to send them home or use them for personal use only.

If an appointee/parent is insistent about purchasing boots in advance, they
may call boot issue at 719-333-3017.
