Hi, my high school senior son just went to his Air Force ROTC interview today and was offered a scholarship at the end of the interview. It's called Commander's Leadership Scholarship. He was told it will cover all of his tuition, books and has a monthly stipend, but no room or board. This is for a very expensive private university, so we are very happy to get the offer. But I want to know if this is same as a type 1 scholarship? I cannot find anything about it on the AFROTC website. Thank you!

It sounds exactly like a Type 1 Scholarship to me, which covers full tuition, monthly stipend, 900 a semester for books, and I don't think it covers room and board. I haven't heard of it being called a Commander's Leadership Scholarship though.

3.12. Commander’s Leadership Scholarship (CLS) for HSSP. Each Det/CC has one CLS offer to award to HSSP applicants. The objective of the CLS for HSSP is two-fold: (1) Increase the acceptance rate of HSSP selectees by making 4-Year scholarship offers as early as possible in the student’s search for a college/university and funding, and (2) provide Det/CCs a powerful tool to recruit high quality students to their Dets to help establish and maintain a solid leadership core for the cadet wing.

3.12.1. All HSSP CLS scholarships are 4-year offers. The offer is a Type 1 scholarship for technical majors and a Type 2 scholarship for non-technical major and foreign language majors.

Thank you very much for the information!

He was told it is only good for the school he interviewed at, and cannot be transfered to another school. But if he accepts it, his AFROTC scholarship application will not be considered at the national level for type 1 or 2 at other schools. We are trying to decide if he should accept it now or wait for the application to be reviewed by the national board. He really likes the school he interviewed at and would love to go there, but the admissions decisions doesn't come out until end of March. This school is extremely hard to get into and we are afraid if he doesn't get in, he will lose the scholarship offer as well as any chances of getting an AFROTC scholarship at other schools.

Do you think if he has been offered this type of scholarship that he will have a good chance of getting a type 1? I don't think his application will be reviewed until next month because he interviewed so late.

Contact the det., and ask them if they talk to admissions. Some do. In other words, they say to admissions we offered an in college scholarship for this school alone, we want him/her. It is basically a back door way of admittance.

I know for a fact that UNCCH does this or at least did it back in 08.

Just explain to them as much as the scholarship is appealing, we have no definitive answer on being accepted, which concerns you since this would be basically putting all eggs in one basket.

Also, many colleges have programs that waive Room and Board or offers at a reduced rate for ROTC. Have you checked to see with the college if they do this for ROTC cadets.

Not every college does, it really can be a hit or miss. Both public and private have these things

Here is the list that SAF posters have compiled regarding schools, so before you call you may want to see if they are on the list. Even if they aren't it means nothing, because maybe no poster has applied to that school yet.

Good luck

OBTW the thread is long, but free money is worth 30 minutes of reading time, right?

I did talk to the detachment commander earlier today and he answered a lot of my questions. He did say he will notify the admissions office that he is offering the scholarship to this candidate, but it doesn't guarantee him a spot in the incoming class. In fact, that happened two years ago when his scholarship selectee ended up on waiting list and did not get admitted. I also asked about room and board waiver and he said it is not available at this school. Thank you very much for your help, I am very grateful for your expertise.

Type 2

I received the commanders leadership scholarship as well from FSU Det 145 and the CLS is equivalent to a type 2 scholarship. Worth 18,000 a year plus 900 for books. good luck making a decision!

If you are in Florida its only really worth $5k a year.

Wow 5K for IS tuition? That is cheap...in VA, it is 2x that, and I think MD is almost 3x that.

The one thing for people to realize is for the book allowance, you lay out the money 1st, and than they reimburse you later...usually about 6 weeks after the semester starts.

Engineering majors have a hard time buying books for a yr for 900 even used. College books are insanely expensive, it is not uncommon for a book to cost 200 bucks. For some you won't be able to buy used because it will be the 1st time the prof is using it.

Also, never buy before the 1st day of class, unless you can get them used. Sometimes, the prof will assign these books, but once you get to class they will tell you that the book was not req., but optional.

I don't think our DS, who is not a tech major, ever spent less than the 450 per semester. When you get to higher grade levels that is when the expense multiplies...mainly because it is harder to find them used.

It is even cheaper actually. Florida Bright Futures Scholarship pay $3750(gpa 3.5) and $2800(gpa 3.0). You need a decent SAT score and 75 hours volunteer work for the larger amount.
