Commissioning 2015

OBTW, if you have a DD, go to your local florist instead of pro flowers.

I stopped using pro flowers this last year. If you go to your local florist you can get the same deal, BUT the big difference is pro flowers will use UPS for delivery. Your local florist will contact a local florist in their area. Same cost, but the difference is they are fresher, and will not drop on the doorstep when it is freezing or boiling hot.

Another great idea that we do for our DD and my Mom is Shari's Berries. They offer big time coupons. I send every Valentines Day their strawberries. (dipped in chocolate).

Actually, Omaha does a lot of specials, especially around holidays. Usually I can get something for @50-55 bucks, free shipping. I just looked at this months Family Value Pack it was 54.99

You have to do a little research. look on their value assortment and also google their coupon code. Than you can find the better deals.

BTW, if you have Discover Card, you can buy $30 of e-certificates for $20 (in any quantity) with your rewards $$. You have to use a different Omaha Steaks 800 number when using e-certificates, but the prices/terms are all the same.

To bring us back on topic, we leave tomorrow for DS' commissioning and graduation weekend. This old Grunt and his spouse will be pinning on the bars and I will be one proud Dad as he takes the oath of office, salutes his first enlisted man and gives him a silver dollar, while wearing a uniform that I only ever saw on the HQ Marines at 8th & I in Washington, DC back in my day (Dress Blue coat, white trousers, Sam Brown belt). A day later he will collect his sheepskin after listening to some boring speeches but will walk away with a degree he can be proud of and a future bright with promise.

Congratulations USMC, have a great weekend. We are heading over to do the same tomorrow, Details to follow I'm sure.

After reading this thread....I am now hungry.

USMC Grunt. Congratulations to your son, you, and if like my family the real power, your wife. Enjoy the week-end and all the ceremonies.

Congratulations USMCGrunt to your son and your family.

If you think the speeches are boring, just wait until you sit through every grad having his or name called, then getting a perfunctory handshake from some poor assistant dean and a folder with a fake diploma (some schools have leaned that the new grads bail out of the proceedings the second they are handed their diploma so they are now making them wait until the end), then posing with aforementioned grimacing dean for a photo.

A rare flip.

Thanks for all the good wishes. The commissioning went off without a hitch. After talking to my son and getting his enthusiastic support I dug through storage and found my father's 2nd Lt bars. So yesterday, in a real tribute to family, history, and tradition, my son used a gold bar from his grandfather (USMC 1956) and another from myself (USMC 1981) for his pinning ceremony. That made the event even more special (if that is even possible)!

For those who have been through this event, it is an incredible feeling to be surrounded by such fine young men and women who have volunteered to serve their country. The family pride and public gratitude is almost overwhelming. The university did a great job and the day was a memorable one.

I know, for certain, that there was one old Grunt that was beaming with pride (while realizing that while the spirit was willing, there was simply no way anyone was going to ask him to rejoin the ranks). It was clearly time to turn the reigns over to the next generation! The future of America's professional military for the next 30 years or so has been commissioning over the last few weeks. God bless them all.

Three generations... that's something to be proud of. Perhaps someday your grandson will be pinning on your bars. Wouldn't that be something?

Well....7 years ago our family started the AROTC journey and this weekend we watched our younger son bring this chapter to a close with his commissioning ceremony. It's been a long and wild at times ride and we couldn't be prouder.

Son's commissioning went great, they were sworn in by BG Peterson, Commanding General of the Special Operations Aviation Command, a Graduate from my son's school and ROTC.

Now for the bars...well, we didn't drop them but I just could not get mine to clip on, fumbling is an understatement, the Master Sergeant came over to help, I was relieved to see he had the same problem, they finally went on and all was right with the world again.

The next day was graduation, at my son's school all the cadets and mids from each service wear their uniforms, not a cap and gown. They walk in with the Professors and sit front and center of the stage. After the commencement speech the University President says a few words about ROTC, then he turns the stage over to the highest Ranking officer in attendance, BG Peterson. The cadets and mids stand and they are all sworn in again. If there was a kleenex moment it was when they finished and were introduced as newly commissioned officers and the crowd gave a long standing ovation that seemed to last forever.

Even though my sons are close to 3 years apart, I swear they sometimes act like twins, I would have never guessed that they would both go to the same college, the same ROTC, belong to the same Fraternity, both branch Aviation.....heck, they ended college with the same GPA.

All in all it was a great weekend, I'd like to thank all of you on this board for all the help, advice, and support over these last years.

Congratulations to all those that have commissioned and those that are soon to commission, good luck and God's Speed.

Great tale jcleppe. Congrats to you and your boys.
