Hello,

I know that the Army has a guaranteed reserve forces scholarship - I’m pretty sure NROTC does not, but uncertain as to whether or not AFROTc does. I’ve heard that it’s possible. Someone told me that if you have an agreement with a reserve unit, you can commission into the AF reserves after ROTC...apparently this often looks like being previously enlisted in that unit, but I wanted to see if there’s any other way to go about this. For example, could I just ask a reserve unit if I can commission into their unit? Or is there another way?

Thanks all!

You're correct that NROTC has no reserve scholarship. Everyone who does NROTC goes active duty. The same has been true for AFROTC, but last year or the year before, they did allow a few folks to commission into the reserves if they wanted. I think the pipe lines were full or something. To hte best of my knowledge though this was a one time thing. It could happen again but you wouldn't know until senior year. At least that's how I recall it. I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong.

He is correct. One of the cadets from my son's AFRotc detachment commissioned as a reserve. Seems to be a relatively new thing. The irony is that as a pilot, he will still pretty much have to go full time for 3 years or so, probably more. I dont know how common that is, but it does exist

Commisioning into the Air Guard or Reserves is a possibility through AFROTC. While relatively new, probablly within the last 2-3 years you are eligible to pursue this option during the beginning of your senior year. The process starts by letting your PAS know and then the real hard part begins: hunting for a unit that will take you. Commisioning into the Guard/Reserves is all on you as you have to contact the unit you want to be apart of and go through their process of hiring (interviewing, coming out to visit, etc). Once you interview/complete their checklist and are formally accepted then you are done and after commisioning go to your Tech school based on whatever unit you got into.

One AS400 Cadet from my Det will be commisioning into the Air Force Reserve this year as a KC-135 Pilot in California. Part of his process was spending hours talking to the unit and eventually flying out to Cali to interview and see if the unit was a good fit for him.
