Hello all,

I have already been accepted to VMI, all my admissions paperwork has been submitted, and I'm planning to pursue a commission via NROTC. I have a few questions regarding ROTC in general at VMI.

I do not currently have an NROTC scholarship, and as a Tier 3 applicant I don't expect that I will receive one. However, I will nonetheless apply for the sideload scholarships and advanced standing. If I don't get any of these, what are my options regarding commissioning? Can I try to switch to another ROTC? Are there other options for commissioning out of VMI? Finally, I can't find how many NROTC cadets pursue and receive commissions, if anyone could help me finding information, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any help :)

Advanced Standing is an option should you not receive a scholarship (no scholarship, but you still commission Navy). The Army and Marine Corps are options and they don’t care about major (I include in this the PLC program). Air Force also emphasizes tech majors, but there are still opportunities there. If ROTC/PLC doesn’t work, there’s a Coast Guard program and OCS/OTS for all branches.

Switching ROTC is best done after first or second semester, but can be done later, especially if you’re planning to go to Army or PLC. Switching into Air Force or Navy later is more difficult.

Also, you should probably change your screen name to 2021+3 since you’re not in the current Rat Mass.

Keep working for that scholarship and don't assume that being Tier 3 excludes you from consideration. Fifteen percent of all NROTC scholarships are dedicated for Tier 3.
