Ebay is quite safe for buying. As long as you're buying from a reputable silver/gold dealer, you're fine. Just don't buy from a private person. As for the reputable companies, you'll know because 1) They have a website besides ebay where that's all they sell; and 2) They have a lot of feedback.

But my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION is to go to your LOCAL COIN SHOP. Everybody has one not too far away. You probably don't even know there's one nearby. Just google for silver gold coin shop. Anyway; you'll do much better there. You'll probably get one for between $20-$25. And if we're talking about CURRENT CADETS who are getting ready to graduate; well, Colorado Springs has a LOT of COIN SHOPS. Click on this link and it lists 7 coin shops in Colorado Springs. (But there's more)

To assist: The following are all reputable Ebay selling companies. They are regular legit companies who happen to also sell on ebay. I recommend buying on ebay instead of their website, because they usually offer free shipping if on ebay. Plus, if you use PayPal, your order is protected against any type of dispute or fraud. Paypal will have your back. The following are all legit.

APMEX (The MOST RECOGNIZED DEALER) A little higher in price; around $30-$35. But that's what you pay for, for the largest and most legitimate company.

As executor of my Mom's estate, I had to dispose of a stash of silver dimes and quarters, $20 bills from the 1800's, miscellaneous old coins, all kinds of interesting money stuff. I did my research and looked for a reputable coin dealer based on years of business, Better Business Bureau record, police complaints and other sources that can be checked. As we walked through the inventory of items, they showed me the sources they check to quote their purchase that day. Very similar to an auto dealer and Blue Book price, as they will buy it for less than they sell it. On one of my visits there, several mids were in shopping for silver dollars in the case with many of the ones described by Christcorp.

And eBay itself is going above and beyond protecting buyers through their dispute resolution process. If a deal goes bad, 99.999% chance you will get your money back within a couple weeks. As a seller of various things on eBay over the years, I don't like some of these seller protections, but I guess they are for the best overall.

I would have no reservations about buying (junk) silver coins on eBay...and have done it in the past.

Went with ktnatalk's post above & ordered coins from the USNA Maryland Parents club. They came today, look great, ordering was easy, & like supporting a SA parent's club. I highly recommend them. Wish a AFA parent's club would do the same.

Had the great honor to commission one of my former students yesterday into the US Army.

I asked if he had a silver dollar...he said "Of course colonel, check it out!"

A 1922 Peace dollar, very nice...

His classmate from HS, another one of my students and a USMC corporal, gave him his first salute. And was stunned by the coin!

    Quality!!

Would give a triple check if I could.
Flieger, you said the oath from memory, right? It never gets old.

I was about to; I know the oath, but it was always: "...having been appointed a second lieutenant/ensign, in the (INSERT SERVICE)..." and then to the end.

However, at the practice, one of the officers handed us these pamphlets and it said: "having been appointed an officer in the armed forces of the United States, in the grade of second lieutenant, do solemnly..."

I looked at that, then at the ROTC/CC...and said something like "is this correct? It's always been..." and I recited it, and then he looked at me, got this look in his eye of doubt...and said something like "its okay sir, its just the oath."
(my assumption was we'd already signed the paperwork, that was good)

So I said "fine, thank you" and from memory I recited the oath as I know it.

My young; newly minted 2LT didn't seem to mind at all!

And you're correct, it NEVER gets old!
