If one graduated highschool with a 2.3 gpa, but has been attending community college with a 3.9 gpa, would they pay attention to your community college gpa since its more recent?? Also assuming you were strong in other parts of the overall applicant.

USMA will still evaluate you on your "whole person score."

Your SAT/ACT will still play a big part of the formula. An upward trend in GPA especially in college courses will help.
Have spoken to a FFR yet about this?

I would venture that a strong course load at community college with courses similar to a Plebe would lend to a favorable view. As always, test scores, extra-curricular activities, community service, sports, CFA scores, etc. all play into the equation.

How you perform in college level classes will carry more weight than your performance in high school. In addition one would assume that your ACT/SAT scores have improved. If you near straight A college performance is enough to overcome your HS 3.2 GPA, only admissions knows. But, you will find out soon enough. Best of luck.

Yes actually, and so far they told me its a good idea to show an improving performance along with consistent activity as a whole. Sorry if this seemed a bit repetetive, this was an post i did a few days ago that didnt get any responses :)

Don't give up if this is really your dream! My son graduated from HS as a good student but young in many ways and expressed an interest in the Service Academies. He attended college p/t. In his first try at admissions, he learned the process but had his eyes opened. The second time around, he was a f/t college student taking a course load similar to plebe year. He maintained an A average and played two varsity sports. He was wait-listed. This past year, he had three summer jobs and was asked to become a teaching RA in his dorm! I am over the moon to tell you that two days ago he received an Appointment to the USNA. We are still waiting to hear from WP. My point is, his journey has been more of a marathon. Keep building the person you want to become!

What classes did you take to get a 3.8? If they were Calculus, Chemistry, English Composition, and World/US History, then that is a good step forward. If you took College Algebra or Trig, then that will not impress admissions. Also you can't get around the SAT/ACT, because those scores still have a significant affect on your overall file strength. If your SAT/ACT scores are low, then the 3.8 is not going to mean much. Many people on this board try to put emphasis on one particular factor for admission and ask how they measure up. For a college applicant do you
1) Have to have a great GPA in Plebe like courses (Calculus, Chemistry, etc.)? Yes.
2) Have to have ACT/SAT scores in at least the 90th percentile? Yes.
3) Have to score above average on your Candidate Fitness Assessment? Yes.

And even if you do all of this it still might not be enough based on the competition in your area. That being said, people have been accepted to the Service Academy's coming out of community college. My DS is one of them.

Love the story, and congrats to you and the kid. And BTW, that great feeling you have as a parent doesnt go away. At least it hasn't for me, and my son is finishing his plebe year (although I'll admit it was pretty tough giving that last hug on R-day, and not seeing or hearing from him for almost 7 weeks thereafter).

I think that it is a great advantage to have a year or so of college before going to West Point (or the Prep school). My son didn't get that, and entered as a 17 year old kid. He is learning a lot about everything as he goes, and it takes its toll.

Good luck to your son on getting an appointment to West Point. We would hate for him to have to settle on that school in Annapolis MD, and bring such shame to your family. LOL.

GO ARMY!! Beat Navy!!

Honestly thats amazing. I have been very busy recently trying to work in school, so far ive gotten myself together again and am getting As and Bs in my junior classes. I was looking into other plans that does/doesn't increase my chances.I personally want to go in my frist year into one of the senior military colleges such as VMI and The Citadel.

Again with my low gpa, but a good SAT/ACT scores, along with other factors...i dont know if i would get accepted into either SMC. I was planning to attend one of them, and while being there apply for USMA. Performing well in a military college along with superior grades, id think it would be more competetive.

I saw that VMI has a 52% acceptance rate while The citadel has a 80% acceptance rate. Do you guys think VMI would accept me? Also would it be a good idea attending a military college while applying to west point?

Didn't you write that you are a junior in high school thinking about applying to VMI? I am confused. Are you in community college or are you a junior in high school?

Im am a student in highschool. I asked hypothetically if its possible to get accepted at USMA as a CC student. Sorry if i didnt seem clear on it, i noticed it appeared that way also.

Thing is i have had different plans, looking at all alternatives, so i asked about the community college first route.

Apply to both VMI and Citadel. Then see which one offers better financial aid. Also apply to ROTC.
FYI, VMI and Citadel while both SMC each has a different 'culture' and 'feel'. You may prefer one over the other.

There are other SMCs that will prepare you. My son did a year at University of North GA. If you are in the corps of cadets, your out of state fees are waived.
