How competitive is it to branch infantry? GPA-wise? Would being an engineer put me ahead of my peers for this?

The short answer is very competitive. You might consider Infantry to be the Flagship Branch of the Army. An engineering major will only help to the extent that your GPA would be given a slight bump over other majors. How much? I don't know. The major itself wouldn't matter to the branch. Remember there is more to one's OML than the GPA.

Do a search on SAF under branching. You will find the kind of detail you are looking for.

Study hard and best of luck!

This 2019 branching list was posted on another thread -sorry for poor clarity, but shows GPA FOR each branch

This is the first year of talent based branching. But if I was choosing future Infantry officers I’d look at GPA, ACFT score, Ranger Challenge participants, tall, and with good hair.
I thought I’d fallen into a “I want to be a Navy SEAL” thread.

Have you ever seen a SEAL without great hair? Or is that only the ones with book or movie deals?

I was going to say that I thought we had confused Infantry with Aviation. An aviator's flow is a pre-req for being in the branch...

The old joke is there are only 3 things needed to be a successful Infantry Officer: tall, good hair and runs fast. Usually said by someone with only 2 of those.

Talent based branching will change the model on branch selection as do many of the Army’s new talent based initiatives. In the new model cadets will get some feedback on how their individual talents tend towards success in some branches as opposed to others. The branches will also get a larger vote in who they get.

I would wager infantry branch is still seeking physically fit leaders and by that those specifically who are crushing things like the ACFT. They will also look for personality types through testing and cadre assessments who are confident and able to lead in the classroom and in precommissioning training.
