Hello.

The plebe laptop package at USMMA is about $2000, but refurbished models and lightly used models which are compatible are available on Ebay sub-$400. Is it a good idea to get one from a third party reseller like this?

No. You are better off buying the package directly from USMMA. I have heard lots of problems from those who brought their own computer.

Securing new through one of the approved vendors will help assure that they are pre-configured with the proper hardware (e.g. compliant Smartcard reader) and will include next business day on site support and accidental damage coverage. Yes, a refurbished model through Ebay is less expensive, but I would hate to save a few Dollars up front and have non-supported hardware issues (or drop/spill) cause a mid to be without a computer for an extended period of time.

I know the expense can be a challenge for some, but buying new is probably a better choice if it can be supported financially.

Any idea when the package at the USMMA NEX store will be available? Have you bought it beforehand to get familiar with it?

All of the new Plebe supplies (personal gear, laptop, printer, etc) that you purchase ahead of time will be delivered to your Plebe in their room, or will be picked up somewhere on campus. You won't get anything early. All part of the fun... : )

It is to your advantage to get your order in early even though you cannot pick it up early. The packages are prepared in the order received. The last few years, the NEX has run out of some supplies which resulted in those who ordered late receiving incomplete packages. You do not need the extra stress of waiting for missing items during the first couple of weeks.

Although costly, buying the computer from the NEX has its benefits... it can be fixed by DOIT for free (had my screen replaced), and imaging/re-imaging goes smoother on school-issued machines. In all fairness, they are nice laptops.
