Anyone know what kind of computers are issued to Plebes? DD just had an access to an external site, and we are trying to figure out if it was her or not. It was for the College Board web site, so it is possible she was checking her AP scores from the spring.

I don't think they get issued computers until the week after PPW. Maybe she had to use a system in one of her rotations to answer a question from someone??

I'm watching this. Curious what my future students will be using for computation. :)

Ip or domain name associated with it?

That would make sense to me. They start working on class placement.

Had the same thing happen during our sons plebe summer.

DD (youngster) got computer (HP laptop during plebe summer. Had it set up with printer when we visited PPW.

Yes, you get your laptops issued very early in plebe summer, but most companies’ detailers keep them locked up in the wardroom until they are needed. Last summer we used them to write our plebe weekly journals every night in a google form, and had to watch a few informative videos such as the one about book issue and ATFP while sitting on the bulkhead. We also had to complete a few research surveys, including one about sexual assault on college campuses.

Well they are also wired to USNA networks sooooo….not that hard to figure out 😂

The first introduction to Ward Hall cyber overwatch. Very easy to determine if someone disobeys a directive to not access the internet.

One of my more interesting moments as a BattO was frying a 3/c for downloading a number of porn movies via govt ethernet onto his issue computer. He had his own little pay-per-view business going for buddies. $5 got you the password to drop by his room and log in to watch, honor system in a jar. Forehead-smacking foolish for thinking he could do this and not get caught. Misuse of govt systems for personal profit and other charges made for an unhappy year for him. His case actually went to the DepDant, who hammered him six ways from Sunday. Ward Hall had let us know the porn site was being accessed and material downloaded. They gave us a heads-up his computer was being accessed during parade practice, so the company officer and I scrambled the senior enlisted leader back to his room, caught another mid (who was supposed to be on watch) viewing the porn, which is how we tumbled to the view-for-cash scheme. By the time our enterprising 3/c had returned from parade practice, his computer had been impounded. This was just before personal devices such as iPads and iPhones arrived. Bottom line, for govt issue laptipns operating on govt systems, observe all rules and directives, because Big Brother is watching.
