Congratulations!

We knew it would happen. You worked hard for this but . . .

The paperwork is just beginning.
A few pressing matters you need to take care of ASAP are:
  • Sign and return your Acceptance Letter now!
  1. Passport (Must be Valid for 4 Years minimum)
    Get your Passport now!
    It can take 45-60 days.
    https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/apply.html

  2. TWIC Card
    https://universalenroll.dhs.gov/programs/twic Apply NOW!

Indicate the purpose for the card is for employment as a Merchant Mariner and that the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is the employer.
Apply for TWIC at least 6 to 10 weeks prior to when the card will be required.
Some TWIC applicants are experiencing delays of more than 75 days to receive their TWIC card.

  3. Physical Readiness Program
    Start working out NOW!
During Plebe Indoctrination you will take two physical fitness tests.
The first fitness test, Initial Strength Test (IST), will be conducted on the second day and consists of maximum curl-ups in two minutes, maximum push-ups in two minutes and a timed 1.5 mile run.
The second fitness test near the end of the two weeks, the Final Strength Test (FST), includes maximum push-ups in two minutes, maximum curl-ups in two minutes and a timed 1.5 mile run.Take Swimming Lessons (if you don't know how to swim)

  4. You will need all of these at INDOC (Friday, June 29th) to be able to sign in.

  5. Get a hold of your local Parent Association.
They will be holding Welcome Aboard celebrations before INDOC.

One more thing to add is the dreaded Wisdom Teeth extraction that needs to be done before Sea Term. Start researching your options as far as timing and costs involved, also dental records will also be needed for submission.

This is what is listed in the Logging In Book for the Class of 2121

Record of Dental Examination For Third Molar Status and Assumption of Financial Responsibility for Third Molar Extraction/Oral Surgery/Associated Costs:
This form should be completed by a parent or legal guardian of a Plebe Candidate, with the assistance of a licensed dental provider, and returned to the Academy’s Dental Service.
The recommendation by the Academy’s Dental Service is that third molars (wisdom teeth) be removed at least 6 weeks prior to Indoctrination if indicated (by your Dentist).
The form certifies that either the wisdom teeth have been removed/do not exist and the parent/legal guardian acknowledges financial responsibility for removal if these teeth are still present and become symptomatic or are deemed to be a potential threat for infection by the Academy’s Senior Dental Officer.

Class of 2022 Logging In Book should be posted by the end of April

This is the first I am hearing of the wisdom teeth requirement. My son is in his senior year track season and it would put a HUGE damper on it if he has to have his wisdom teeth removed 6 weeks prior to indoc. (would really hurt him for championships). Our licensed dentist said he likely would not need them removed. Heck I did not have mine removed until I was 25.

What happens if you do not have them removed before indoc?

It can be done at a later date. An option is to schedule removal during the Christmas Break which is the this first longer break they have after INDOC.

The point of my post above is If Indicated by YOUR Dentist.
So have your Dentist fill out the form with you stating that they do not need to be removed.

If down the road, before Sea Year, they are determined that they have become symptomatic or are deemed to be a potential threat and should be removed it would be your responsibility to pay for the removal.
The MIDS are checked before shipping out to alleviate any potential problems (e.g. No Dentist on their ship at Sea)

Thank you very much for the listing. It really helps!
For acceptance letter, is there a paper work? The online portal acceptance was recently completed, but there was no paper work received to be signed. Is there any paper work missing here?? Thanks.

Most of the federal academies require your wisdom teeth removed. Our son ran cross country/spring track and he had his out without any trouble down time was maybe 3 days.

Plus, once they are removed, the oral surgeon has to sign a note stating they are properly healed.

Just my recommendation, but I would have wisdom teeth OUT before USMMA. Gives you the longest time for healing. There were a couple of 2021 who were told to get theirs out before sea year and they had to cram it in either while at the Academy or during the brief breaks. Just get it over with!

You will receive the BFE with the very important Appointment Acceptance paperwork in with it. If you do not receive it shortly, contact Admissions ASAP.

How shortly do I have to receive the paperwork? After accepting the appointment, I emailed admission and they said there is nothing I have to do now. I got the appointment letter by mail and portal was updated. However, I don't have any other paperwork nor email from USMMA. Since I contacted and respond on Monday, I don't want to bother too much but worry. How long do I have to wait before contacting again?

I might have misunderstood your question, did you receive, in the mail, an appointment letter along with the Acceptance Letter which you return to USMMA indicating your acceptance of your appointment? If you returned that and your portal shows that you have accepted, you just need to wait for the further mailing which is indeed a Big Fat Envelope not just in name, and contains all sorts of forms and paperwork. I don't remember when that came but it seems like it should be fairly soon. My reference to the 'BFE' is more of a forum acronym meaning that you have received an official appointment. If you got that and did that, you're all good!

We went to the Open House on Friday and the Admissions Director said that the Loggin In instructions will be emailled next week. The hardcopy documentation will be sent out the following week.
