I was shipmates with a few of those guys when I first started going to sea.. On my first merchant ship [sailing as a cadet] both Third Mates had been torpedoed in the Atlantic; with one having been torpedoed twice.. The one that had survived being sunk twice had also been in Montevideo on a Norwegian freighter and had witnessed the scuttling of the GRAFF SPEE. I also sailed for many years with a radio operator that had made the Murmansk run in convoy PQ-17.. All those guys had some epic sea stories. A good book that documents the heavy losses suffered by the US Merchant Marine during World War II is 'A Careless Word... ...A Needless Sinking' by Captain Arthur R. Moore [KP class of '44].

During the war Kings Point had what was known as the 'Tin Fish Club'.. It was comprised of USMMA Cadet-Midshipmen who had survived their ship being sunk due to enemy action. They even had a membership card and certificate..
