Congressional Nomination posted today in Portal for our DD for USNA ⚓️. Curious as to who nominated her? When should we expect an appointment?

I may be the least experienced here, but if she has an LOA it may be a lock. And based on other comments, does it really matter where the nom came from? Regardless congratulations! I hope the appointment is next.

No LOA. However she passed her CFA with flying colors and also was awarded most outstanding candidate at Summer Seminar. Some have mentioned that, that award would get her an LOA but that hasn’t happened.

As far as who nominated her, I agree it really doesn’t matter we’re just so thankful. However, would it appear differently on her portal if she was the PNOM?

I don't think it appears differently on the portal, i.e. a primary nom vs. a nom. My daugther is a recruit, so I'm told she just needs a nom regardless of a primary or not. In her USNA portal the only remaining X box is Nomination.

She should most certainly not expect an offer of appointment. A nomination is just one piece of the puzzle required to be considered for an offer of appointment. She needs to be triple-qualified (3Q) as well as having a nomination.

3Q = Medical (DoDMERB and any waiver needed), Physical (CFA), Academic (all other stuff evaluated).

When/if she gets to 3Q+Nom status, she will go into a much smaller group to compete for an offer of appointment. Nobody knows the size of that group, but the general consensus is that it's between 3,000 to 3,600 candidates. Of that group, approximately 1,200 will receive offers of appointment and 100 or more will decline those offers, making the new incoming class approximately 1,100 Midshipmen.

Candidates should hope for the best, but always continue to work on plans B and C as insurance.

Great points above that she should not expect an offer of appointment. Being nominated is vital, but most nominees don’t get in. Being qualified is vital, but most qualified candidates don’t get in. Being recognized at summer seminar is certainly something to be proud of, but take with a large grain of salt any mention of an LOA (those who recognize her are not the same as those who actually make the LOA decision).

It’s a very competitive process. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. And yes, continue tending to Plans B, C, D…

Wow … this thread Title jumped out at me … it takes up the whole screen on my little iPhone …. Could be a new SA Forums record?

Anyway … I like the anticipation and eagerness of the question … everyone wants to know the eventual outcome and will be following this thread …

Let a little air out of the balloon and tend to backup plans is always a good thing 😎

And no matter when the applicant submitted their application or when it is complete, USNA offers of appointment can go well into April, sometimes beyond, if something like a waiver is still pending.

If you look at USNA appointment threads for this cycle and past years, the first trickle of appointments starts in the fall, usually for those with service-connected noms. Thanksgiving timeframe sees the first drip of appointments with elected official noms, with more coming in the New Year, as applicant deadline and elected official nom slate deadline to USNA come and go.

This is a game of patience.

Great stuff already. Also consider this point: there are 9 other people on that slate. One gets the appointment charged to that Nom. 9 don’t (for illustrative purposes…).

A Nom doesn’t equate to an appointment directly. It keeps the door open, but they are still competing in a big pool! You may not know until very late. My youngest came off the waitlist in May.

Continue to work plan B!!

If you haven’t done this already, go read the pinned post at the top of the Nominations forum. USNA can offer appointments to other fully qualified applicants in a slate (list) of noms, even after the offer has been made to the one who will take the MOC’s slot this cycle.

I've no doubt that the MOC who nominated your DD will reach out to congratulate her. This is Rule #1 in constituent relations. :shake: Then you will know. Once she knows who nominated her, she can (not suggesting she necessarily should) reach out to the SA liaison for that MOC to find out if it's a principal nom. Even with a principal nom, USNA is not required to appoint that person -- although typically they do. See the Nominations sticky in the Noms forum for details.

You should be able to tell in the portal where the nomination is coming from. If it's coming from your Congress Person it will say "NC District 13" (or whatever it happens to be), if from a Senator it would say whether it came from the Senator #1 or #2 from your state etc...It doesn't say the person's name but it does tell you what the source is. Last year DS's popped up and we knew it was from our congresswoman because of the district listed, and we got a formal letter in the mail a few days later letting us know as well.

UP to 9 other people.
Not always the case.
And why I included ‘illustrative purposes’. Other things can happen as well. Could also be more, with two spots available.

Point is, sometimes people think getting the Nom, is the big deal. That’s how OP’s title read to me. But it’s only a piece. The rest of the slate also has a Nom. Don’t count yourself IN until you have the appointment. And continue to work on plan B’s.

Even with a Nom, and attending STEM, summer seminar (and receiving a ‘best’ award), a CVW, and a Nom….as awesome as all that is, the Nom only fills that Nom requirement. But, the rest of the slate could also have the same resume.

Good luck to OP’s DD! It’s an exciting time of the year!

As mentioned:

A nom does not guarantee an appointment.

An LOA does not guarantee an appointment.

Being the "best" at a summer seminar does not guarantee an appointment.

Having an appointment offer in the portal is the only guarantee. :p

@esmeraldarolivares Congratulations to your daughter on her nomination! Have your daughter work on her alternate plans. Meeting or even exceeding USNA's appointment requirements doesn't guarantee an appointment. I actually think a little bit of luck is involved too. You never know who they are looking for when they are building the class and sometimes who/what they are looking for seems to change from cycle to cycle and even during the cycle. The wait can go right up to I-Day. Keep the faith!

My son's came through too and it says IL District 03 so we know it's the representative. Does yours say anything like that?

During DS application cycle the Senator nominations were in the portal with #1 and #2, referring to the senior and junior Senators. Possibly that may be the case this cycle.

Congratulations to your daughter on her nomination. That is a happy day, I remember it well. Fingers crossed everything falls into place. Make sure she stays healthy and proceeds with all alternate plans.
