Contact from Recruiting Officer

I got a message from them too. From what I've seen, they are well known in NC. But from what I have seen from what shows up on YouTube about there college, I decided it wouldn't be a very good school to go to. The first two results for ECU on YouTube were a bunch of people partying at the school. I realize that's not all they do there but it just makes the school look bad so I'm not putting at as a school of choice. There ROTC might be amazing but they don't look very good as far as how the other students spend their time

Try finding a school (other than University of Phoenix or Webster) that doesn't have partying videos on YouTube.

I got the same email. That's right I apply every year. What this ROO did was pull the email addresses of all applicants, whether they were qualified or not, and spammed them (in my opinion). My question to the board is how would you feel if you received 270 similar emails, one from each ROTC program. I'm sure ECU is a great school, but there have to be better, more ethical ways to publicize your school (like maybe helping out on the discussion boards or publishing a helpful blog).

Thank you. That was my thought.

ECU is well respected in NC for certain majors, specifically, education and nursing. Basically for NC students when they apply to college, ECU is typically on their IS college list as a match or a safety, but if they want to be a teacher or a nurse than ECU will be placed higher than even NCST.

My DIL graduated from ECU and I would not call it a party school at all, if anything I would say that it is more like a college where the kids go home on the weekends compared to other IS colleges like Appalachian, UNCW and NCST. The only thing I would say is they are fanatical when it comes to football. The school is located in Greenville, NC which is about 70 miles from Raleigh. Greenville is a very college oriented town. ...purple and gold (school colors) or pirates (mascot) everywhere.

I agree with others that I would not look too deep into the youtube aspect.

I too got the ECU email, however I also got one from Wentworth Military Academy. Was that also a shotgun email, or does it mean something more?

Pima, that is all good and well but the most important question is still unanswered.... How is the BBQ?

I cannot provide anything current and useful about the school, but I can attest to attending some very fine pig-pickins in that area over the years, a whole hog spread-eagled over a converted 55-gallon drum, cooked overnight. Classic Tidewater NC bbq, and convenient to the Outer Banks, not that far from Camp Lejeune, and plenty of pine trees. A peaceful and pleasant area, mostly rural in nature.

Apologies for stepping off the path of the serious subject of the thread. The mention of BBQ hooks me every time.

Our DS rec'd a call from the Army ROTC program at our local public college yesterday (3/1). He is interested in exploring this as an option and has already been accepted to the college in general as a back up plan if not accepted to SA.
We are meeting with the recruiter today.
Any specific questions we should ask? Any advice for us as we go in and have a conversation with the ROTC representative?

Here are some starting points.
  • Meet with the ROO and/or PMS.
  • Find out numbers in the Battalion
  • Try to get statistics on percentage of commissioning
  • Find out details of how many cadets are sent to Summer programs (CULP, Air Assault etc).
  • Meet with a few current cadets and get their feedback. (Is the cadre involved with the cadets academically or are you on your own?).
  • Get a feel for the college itself (Very important!)

He is already familiar with the college since it is local and he has other friends that go there.
Thanks again, I will print these questions for the meeting today.

East Carolina University.
I got the exact same email today. Willing to bet they sent the same email to a pool of applicants.
My son heard from them too. He asked, have I ever heard of them, I told him no, but he could go there, it sounds warm! (was kidding of course)

My daughter was contacted by ECU as well. It would be a good fit for her academically. However, it was not listed as a choice on her scholarship application. She is already boarded so no changes can be made (is that correct?). So, should we look at this as a campus based scholarship option rather than a national scholarship option?
My son changed his schools after he was boarded and two that were part of his 3 offered were the new ones added
DS has also gotten emails and he just sent thank you emails and let them know he has accepted a 3 yr AROTC award at AUM, The ROO from ECU was super nice and told him congrats and complemented the AUM program. For me that shows someone that is going to want to make sure those with his program are feeling supported. I believe they also offer free Room and board for ROTC.

I'm the enrollment and scholarship officer for ECU. Yes, I sent out an email to all scholarship applicants. I've found that many, if not most, of these applicants do not know the Army may provide other opportunities and ways to become part of an ROTC program. Many of these students don't even know they can participate in ROTC if they don't get the scholarship. I've received 100's of positive responses, some are listed below. ECU has a fantastic ROTC program and we care enough to provide information to EVERY scholarship applicant--even those who won't do ROTC at ECU. If your're interested I would invite you come to Greenville and take a look at our program. I would be very happy to spend an hour or two with you individually and show you our program and answer your questions. You can also take a look at our program online at: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/AROTC/ or our facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/ecuarmy/?ref=hl
We also have a great video posted to YouTube at:
We have some of the best training facilities in the nation: ECU provides 600 acres of on-campus woodlands with a rappel tower, climbing wall, engineered confidence course, and engineered land navigation course. ECU also has an Engagement Skills Trainer that employs the M4 rifle and M9 pistol. If you like to shoot, you will practically have unfettered access to our EST, M4s and M9s. Come take a look!

Here are some examples of the positive responses to my email:

"Thank you for your informative email. Although I will be attending West Point next year for school, I have always made it a point to let the various ROTC programs know when they stand out. I would just like to let you know that the picture advertisement at the bottom of the page is actually very informative and worthy of praise. It shows me that your program is very serious and has experience. I just wanted to let you know that it is a job well done. Thank you for your email. "

"Thank you for your email. I am very much interested in the Army ROTC program at ECU. I would definitely like to meet with you to learn more about the ROTC program and to discuss scholarship opportunities and other tuition assistance programs at ECU. "

"ECU is a top school I am considering."

"Thank you for reaching out. I am very interested I was recently accepted into ECU and it is my first choice. I will send you the necessary documents and I also have a couple of questions I would love for you to give me a call. Thanks again!"

"We are stationed in Germany. Thank you I will talk this over with my dad and set up a time. "

"Thank you for contacting me! I have extreme interest in the Army ROTC program, and I have a few colleges in mind. I will definitely add East Carolina University to that list! I wanted to know what is the deadline for the college application to ECU. Once again thank you for contacting me!"

"I thank you for contacting me, I am in fact interested in a campus tour along with a discussion of the program. How may i proceed in scheduling one?"

"Thank you for the informative email. Unfortunately I did not apply to East Carolina (is it too late?), but I did find your email helpful in giving me another option for school. I enjoyed reading that there are other options if a ROTC scholarship is not awarded and would love to find out the other options. Is there anyway I could be able to talk to you over the phone in a few days to find out more?"

"Thank you very much for reaching out. I was hoping to stay local at least for my first year and have already applied to, been accepted and remitted my deposit to Loyola University which is where I applied for the ROTC. I'm still boarded so assuming chances are slim that I'm going to secure such scholarship so will definitely need to keep my options open. I am excited for an opportunity to serve my country and earn my education at the same time so I do appreciate the opportunity you've extended to me and will keep it in mind as I try to figure out what i will do from here."

"I want to thank you and the institution for showing interest in my University studies. I am definitely interested on ECU!"

"I am interested in the ECU Army Rotc wanted to be informed with more information about the scholarships and tuition assistance that is offered!"

"Hello, looking through East Carolina University site, I've become very interested. How can I be apart of ECU army ROTC?"

"Thank you for sending me this information on ECU. I went ahead and applied since today was the deadline, but did not pay my application fee yet. Any more information on the ROTC program at ECU would be great as I am still considering schools. Thank you for your time."

"Can I call about some of the ROTC scholarship opportunities?"

"Hey I am definitely interested in doing ROTC in college. I was competing for the national scholarship but literally 2 days before I was supposed to take the physical, I had a compound fracture in my shin and I have just gotten to the point where I can run a mile again. Are there any options left for me in your program? I'm not going to sugar coat it, I would need quite a bit of scholarship money to make up for the out of state costs but I am willing to work very hard for any penny I can get."

"Yes, I am interested."

"Thank you for your email. I am very much interested in the Army ROTC program at ECU. I would definitely like to meet with you to learn more about the ROTC program and to discuss scholarship opportunities and other tuition assistance programs at ECU. "

"I have not considered East Carolina University but it looks like a very good campus and program. As you probably know that I live in Edinboro, Pa. I would rather go to a local school to save money on room and board. That is the biggest concern in for looking at a college. But I am interested in learning more about your program."

"Thanks a lot. I will apply tonight and keep you informed on any decisions I make or any questions I have.""

"Hello, you contacted me yesterday about your ROTC program. I'm not only interested in your Army ROTC program but also East Carolina University. I am aware that the deadline for applying is today so can I apply today? I was not able to apply because I was playing in my last varsity basketball game in my high school career. Thank you for your interest and the information. Have a great day."

"Thank you for this information. I have accepted a scholarship and will attend Georgia Military College as part of the Early Commission Program. After two years, I will be transferring to another school to complete my undergraduate degree. I will certainly keep East Carolina in my plans."

"Thanks for reaching out! I have not looked into East Carolina University's ROTC yet, but I did see there's a nursing program within the school. Could you offer some details about that and how it coincides with your ROTC program? Any extra information about the university or ROTC I would highly appreciate. Thank you for your time."

"I have received your email and I am interested in the Army ROTC program at ECU. I have researched the program and ECU is one of my top picks. My application has already been submitted and I'm currently waiting on a response. I would like to schedule an on-campus visit and I am checking with my parents to coordinate a date. Which dates do you suggest that I'd receive the most on my visit. I am looking forward to speaking with you soon , if for any reason you will need to contact me you can email or reach call me"

"Thank you so much for reaching out to me. I'll be sure to apply!"

"I am very interested in ROTC for college. I would love to schedule a visit and talk about future opportunities. God Bless and Thank you."

"Thank you for your email. I was awarded a 3 year National Army ROTC scholarship to AUM, Howard or UNG. I have selected AUM as I built a great rapport with the staff at AUM during a visit."

"Thank you so much for your consideration!"

"Thank you very much for your email. I would greatly be interested in scheduling an on-campus visit or a phone interview to discuss the ROTC program. I will look into seeing if I am able to update my ROTC selection as it is closing in on the deadline this evening. I am not sure if I am able to update and add your university. If not, any suggestions?"

"Yes I have definitely chosen ECU as one of my top choices as I would love to go there (number one school) and I would love to plan a visit to discuss the program! I have been accepted to ECU and regardless of ROTC scholarship outcome I would still plan on doing the rotc program at east carolina. Is sometime next week a good time for you for a meeting?

If just one candidate finds that ECU is a solution for them then I have no problem with the email blast.

One favor, can you please edit out the one phone number posted in your email quotes for privacy reasons? Thanks!

The BBQ is fantastic! Congratulations! I have two sons of my own going the SMP route at BYU. One is at FT Sill, OK and the other at FT Jackson. My daughter will apply for the scholarship this summer. I'm trying to convince her that ECU is the way to go, but she's set on BYU as well.
