Can anyone give me some guidance on how to find a job in the galley on a container ship.I have been in food servicefor over 25 years.I attended cooking school at the Marine Cooks and Stewards School in Santa Rosa Ca.I have no credentials to be able to work on a ship but I am looking for some guidance on where to go to work on a ship instead of the same routine of cooking in a restaurant.Any help on where to go would be kindly appreciated

Not container ships but the federal civilian crewed “CIVMAR” USNS ships of the Navy.

You can also explore cruise industry cooking jobs. Many cruise lines have U.S. offices in Fort Lauderdale/Miami.

Check out some of the mariner unions for job opportunities and paths to required certifications. For example Seafarers Union has openings for Culinary specialists with food preparation experience and at least eight years of military service.

Probably worth a review...Sea Chefs
Looks like that company contracts with foreign flag vessels. Not sure what the credentialing would be. I do know that, for US flag vessels, the SIU does have a program for entry level unlicensed positions and includes the steward's department.

I recommend contacting the Seafarers International Union (SIU). The SIU has programs to assist you in obtaining the requisite training and merchant mariner credential. In addition, the union will assist you in job placement on U.S. flag vessels.

Join a Union like SIU. They can get you started. A good cook on a ship is always appreciated.
