Coronavirus implications for SAs?

My appointee has an older sibling and many friends at civilian colleges. Every day we are hearing about more schools announcing closures and going online for the rest of the semester. I don't think any of us knows how long this will all play out.

We know that the academies have cadets and mids in tight quarters and working together for many purposes. Any thoughts on potential impacts on I-Day, basic cadet training, and SA life in general? Is there a historical precedence for this kind of thing? We are not a military family and have so many questions.

I have copied this quote below from Capt MJ on the HSNA forum page where there is a discussion going on about coronavirus. Hope this helps.

"Like many institutions and the military at large, USNA will be proceeding on a day-to-day basis, doing operational risk analysis and balancing mission vs. risk, must-do things vs. nice-to-do things. The health of the Brigade and the mission of producing Navy and Marine officers will trump everything else, and decisions will be made accordingly. They will preserve I-Day, or adjust as needed, or cancel. There is no way to predict this far in advance, but guaranteed these discussions are ongoing. There will be coordination with Big Navy, DOD and other service academy counterparts".

I posted this in another thread:

I can tell you that in the winter of my First Class Year, we had an epidemic of what was called the "Russian Flu" which as I recall, ended up knocking out over half of the brigade. Classes were cancelled and liquid meals were delivered to each company area as there were too many sick mids to handle it at the Hospital. I think I remember them closing the yard and cancelling athletic contests but Graduation week was not affected.
Herndon, Ring Dance and I Day were not affected either.

Additional info- I think that the yard and class closures were for about a week or so and after that, while much of the brigade was still sick or recovering, they gradually got us back to work. FWIW, the effects were felt long afterward on physical tests like the run. I know that a coupld of months afterward, we were just getting back to full endurance but standards/tests were not reduced or eliminated.

This just in from CGA Admissions...

Unless otherwise announced, we will hold on-campus events and attend nation-wide recruiting events for prospective applicants and their parents. One exception to this is the Cadet for a Day (for Junior Athletes) scheduled for March 16-17 due to the short turn-around time for Cadets returning from Spring Break on Sunday; that event has been cancelled and alternate spring/summer dates are being considered. Additionally, USCGA personnel will be screened upon returning from leave to ensure the health and safety of our Corps of Cadets, faculty/staff, and visitors.

Something to remember about the SA's. As @Capt MJ eloquently put it the military and the SA's all have contingency plans in place and will institute precautions as needed. As for the students and permanent party stationed at ANY military installation, they are probable better off than many of us in the general public. Bases, and Posts can be "locked down" on a moments notice, the population there is generally very healthy, young, strong, and resistant to viruses that the general public may be more susceptible to. The only concern that we as parents have is that the SA's hopefully have a plan in place to check or monitor the 4400 plus members returning from leave. Maybe they will bring back one class at a time, screen them, then bring back the next, but we are pretty sure our son is likely better off at his SA than at a public or private university.;)

This just in from CGA Admissions ten minutes ago:

Official notifications will be sent shortly to all students who have registered, but the decision to cancel all on-campus events through the end of March was just made. Unfortunately, this impacts our scheduled Admissions briefs/cadet-guided campus tours and the Academy Experience Program scheduled for March 19-20. We're hoping to resume our campus visitation programs on April 1st, but please check our website for updates.
