Coronavirus - Military Updates

Pensacola NAS closed to all visitors, as of today.

DS (who is a dr) at Langley AFB confined to 100 mile radius and DS at McChord AFB also has 100 mile radius - generous compared to those above.

Son #1 read this and texted me to say that the 50 mile thing is kind of silly. After all, itā€™s Alamogordo, so it doesnā€™t matter if the radius is 50 or 100 miles, thereā€™s nothing within the circle anyway šŸ˜‚.

My son drove the 130 miles today from 29 Palms to Camp Pendleton to promote a Marine to sergeant. Fortunately he had permission to go. After the ceremony they went to San O beach with the surf boards complete with FB and IG photos.

Yeah, can't visit the girlfriend or be best man for my best friend's wedding, if this keep up.

I ventured into the apocalypse today looking for a workout. I joined Planet Fitness a couple years ago as they have three clubs on my way to work and it's only 22ish bucks a month for a black card membership. I got an email from them at 2200 Tuesday night and they have closed all clubs. This was the same day the payment was taken out.

So I drive to MCB Quantico which looked close to ghost town-like and pulled up to the Barber gym front door. There were signs on the doors which a Devil Dog was reading and I asked him what they said. "There's no staff inside and active duty only can workout by registering their CAC card and letting themselves in." I have no problem with that. I thought about driving across 95 to Camp Barrett which is the TBS and FBI side of base to give Ramer gym a try. I didn't but stopped at the PX instead. There was a long line to get in the commissary next door when they opened in 10 minutes. I went in to the PX and got a couple items and drove out to Shoppers.

My son is an exercise observer and controller at he Marines' combat center at 29 Palms, CA. He said just four or so days ago all exercises and travel to 29 was off. Now the unit scheduled to go from Pendleton will do their exercise. ITX they call it. I also read yesterday that east coast Marines have had their training restrictions lifted. I don't know if that means flying to the desert.

Also on the 29 Palms situation, the base CG has set staggered times for the gym so as to not have as many people in the building at once. He also has opened it 24 hours a day.

USNA covid guidance

Cliff notes:

Mids are home indefinitely, must stay within 150 miles of leave destination. Accountability goes every morning by 1200 ET. Online classes start tomorrow.

Our USMA Firstie started on line classes today... bummed about not being with his 2020 buddies but understands that many in this country have bigger issues to deal with.

The U.S. Military Academy Office of Admissions continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely. Based on what is currently known, the vast majority of young people recover without medical issues. In this context, there are no plans to deny admission to individuals who are diagnosed with COVID-19 and recover. If your healthcare provider recommends being tested, we strongly encourage you to follow their advice, without worrying that your testing will impact your ability to access as a New Cadet.

There's a thread on here where we commented on the personnel reductions imposed by the Defense Health Agency. Just a few days ago a list of MTFs and clinics that will no longer care for retirees was published. One of many problems is we got used to operating MTFs with civilians during the two decades in the ME. If a billet can be bought, why have that person in uniform they said. This outbreak now has the services calling for retirees and veterans to return to uniform. I and lots of others don't like the road DNA is going down with the three medical departments.

I retired from Military Sealift Command where I was the shipboard medical programs manager. I called my old office yesterday on another matter. I guess I called my old code because the office is now in Norfolk instead of the Washington Navy Yard. Anyway, the medical officer answered and was gracious enough to give an old program manager the courtesy of a few minutes. One can imagine how busy she was with both hospital ships activated and one underway for this national emergency. Even with the stress, cross communication, and demands from her many bosses, some who she had never heard of, she took those few minutes and I heard an audible deep breath and then a chuckle. That made me want to be back there helping get this thing done with a leader like that.

Hey, I'll fly again. Heck, I don't even have to pilot anything. I just miss that cockpit smell.
It's more of a stink, really. Pilots know what I'm talking about.

The no camping sounds a little silly. From a medical perspective, as long as you practice social distancing, itā€™s better to be outside in fresh air and sunlight than coped up inside.

Saw where the entire ship is now out of service while they test the entire crew. I am guessing berths on a carrier are tighter than on a cruise ship.

I think that you could say that, yes. :)
Here is a new (more spacious) berthing compartment aboard CVN-71:

I agree. In fact he went to the WG/CC and got permission to go camping the next weekend. They go way out in the Lincoln National Forest in the mountains by Cloudcroft and it is just the two of them and the dog in the tent. No other people at all. They had a good time.
