I have a question for the recipients of the 4 year AROTC scholarships. Do you still need to pay your college/university the first semester tuition, expenses, and your uniform fee out of pocket before you contract in the fall? If so, does the Army pay you back for these expenses? And are you taking out student loans to pay for your first semester ahead of time?

I'm assuming it depends on the school you go to, I know for my school I had to pay the initial 1st semester tuition (room and board was covered by the school) then once I was contracted, I was reimbursed for what I had paid. You should also be issued your uniforms by your battalion and not have to pay for them. Hope this helps!

Every school is different. We just paid the initial enrollment fees (not much) including housing and communicated with the Bursars office (Finance) when the Army was slow to pay tuition initially. Fees/Costs we paid toward tuition to finalize enrollment were reimbursed to our account. The school did waive all the late fees for tuition. Uniform fees i have no idea. If you reference uniform fees your DS/DD is likely attending VMI, Citadel, Norwich ..... and if you provide the details someone could likely answer more specifically.

I will add to the "every school is different" statement because my kids went thru AROTC at separate schools. For whatever reason, my daughters tuition & fees were always paid on time but for my son, we get MULTIPLE late payment notices EVERY semester from the school. I harass my son and then end up panicking and calling the school and EVERY time they tell me not to worry about it as they know my son is ROTC.

If you son is a 4 year scholarship winner, there are no uniform fees and they will be issued as soon as school starts (unless something has changed).

Norwich has told me that they know what funds they are expecting and do not expect the students to pay only to be reimbursed later. They said we would be billed for the difference only.

What is the difference I wonder- meaning uniforms/ books etc? Since it is all covered by ROTC is it just a bill that is sent and eventually wiped out(at Norwich). So will I be issued my uniform and books without putting anything down if I have a full ROTC?i was under the impression everything is covered. Thanks

DS contracted first week of December freshman year for a 4 year campus based scholarship so we paid for the first semester and we were reimbursed by the college. Tuition and fees were paid just after the drop add period for each semester.

So does that
Mean he did not have it going in and earned it once there? Thank you

At Norwich I do not think the Corp of Cadets uniforms are cover by scholarship.

I wouldn't think any uniforms that are specific to the school would be covered by the scholarship.

At Norwich you will pay for your uniforms (Corps of Cadets). It is around $4000, split into the first 4 semesters. So around $1000 each semester. You will pay for your books, and eventually you will receive your book allowance of around $600/semester. It is to your advantage to pay as little as possible for your books, as you get to keep the difference. You do also get an ROTC uniform allowance at Norwich, cannot remember how much that was or when it came.
My son contracted mid-October, 2 years ago. He had however, passed the PT test in August (scholarship cadets arrive a few days early so they can take the PT test and do paperwork). Not sure what date the kids contracted this year.
As far as what is allowed in your room your Rook year, not much. If you go on the Corps of Cadets page on Norwich.edu, and click around on there, you will find lists of what to bring. Make sure you are looking at the Corps of Cadets list and not the Civilian list. You will need to purchase your boots and dress shoes, sneakers, certain items for Rook arrival day, toiletries, towels, sheets, and a few other things. It is all spelled out on there. You can have a computer, printer (people will love you - you can exchange printing for food!), phone (which can only be used for a 10 minute call on Sundays), clock (not a clock radio).
Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Thank you very much. I did not know about the uniform cost and difference .i will look on the website for lists of items. Do they use digital copies or all books? I have seen the bookstore so I know there are many physical books that can be purchased but was wondering about digital downloads.

When you get your class list, there will be a link that says "buy books". Each of your classes will show up with the required books. There will be choices like "buy new" "buy used" "rent new" "rent used". Not sure if they give a choice for e-books on that link. Sometimes you can find those on other sites. My son bought very few through the school - we usually find them cheaper on the internet. However, some of the books can only be purchased through the bookstore, as they are a special packet.
