Could I get waiver for Army service for Crohns that I haven't had for 18 years?

Long story short I had Crohns when I was 1 years old. They did a small intestine resection (very small part, like 1 inch) and now I haven't had Crohns for 18 years and neither require nor take any medications.

There have been others on the forum who asked if Crohns is waiverable I know, but most of them are people who have either recently had it, still take meds, or are actually still suffering from symptoms.

I don't see why I wouldn't or shouldn't get a waiver, I am not problematic.

Rust -- thank you for being willing to serve. I'm assuming you want to go to West Point or do AROTC?

I am NOT a doctor. IMHO DoDMERB will have to say you are DQ

Page 21 seems relevant to your condition

A DQ then puts it into the the hands of the Army's medical waiver authorities ... Either the West Point Superintendent or Army ROTC's Cadet Command commanding General.

West Point won't pursue a medical waiver unless they deem your record "competitive" essentially meaning they want you.

AROTC won't pursue a waiver unless they award you a national scholarship.

In other words, whether a waiver is pursued is dependent on how competitive your record is.

Whether a medical waiver is granted will be dependent on the specifics of your condition, the needs of the Army, and concerns of the medical staff advising the relevant Army medical waiver authority.

Unfortunately I do not think any of us on the forum can give you a definitive answer on likelihood of a medical waiver being granted. You seem to have a good medical "history" with this condition that may work to your favor, but you are going to have to go "all in", apply, and compete to find out the answer.

Best wishes to you.

my son was given rotc but was diagnosed with some kind of GI issue (first UC then Crohns) now not so sure so we are going to need a waiver also. It seems they jump the gun with this disease, for some kids they wait too long others they seem to assume right away . He only took the meds they told him he would need forever for a month and stopped. Now he has no issues and seems to be doing much better when off the meds. Wish you the best of luck, have you had any colonoscopy done after your diagnosis?
