There are two days left in my school year, and my counselor just informed everyone that he will not be returning in the fall. As a current junior is this going to create problems? I’m planning on securing his contact info and letter of recommendation ASAP. But will the NA want a recommendation from my current counselor or my new one come August? Any advice on how I can alleviate this awkward transition and sudden change in events?

Why would they care what counselor it comes from. I understand you may have had relationship with the prior counselor and he could be more personal when writing a recommendation, but I dont think it is going to be an issue

Call admissions and see what they suggest. Best to get it from the horses mouth than from some anonymous soul on here. (Not quite the way I wanted to phrase that, but this is a family forum).

I agree with Humey. I don’t think the academy will care whether your letter is from your old counselor or new one. Many students who go to huge high schools barely know their counselors, and changes like this are not the fault of the student. Don’t let this freak you out. Get a letter from both (old and new) and see which one you like best and send that one in - provided they give you a copy. Best of luck!

Our DS’s counselor also left after Junior year. We were also worried that this transition would complicate things as he had a great relationship with her. We had the prior counselor communicate with his new one and everything worked out well. Good luck!

Does USNA even ask for a recommendation from the Counselor ? BGO's don't see the whole Admissions packet, but I've been doing this long enough and have never heard of the Counselor recommendation. USNA has specific Math and English teacher evaluations (not a recommendation letter). A MOC may want a counselor recommendation for nominations.

If I remember correctly (and it's been a WHOLE 2 years), there is something that a counselor is asked to verify. Details about involvement in school/activities/sports/clubs etc... is reported by the candidate and a school representative (and they may refer to it as "counselor") basically has to sign off on the accuracy of the Candidate's Application information. Anyone who just went through this can confirm, or not.

DS thought he was going to have the same issue (fortunately, the school board saved the counselors that were going to be furloughed at his school because of budget issues). DS made sure to get a written LOR from his counselor last month (before counselor's position was spared) because two of the MOCs require it. You might want to check on your MOC's LOR requirements, if they are known.

^^ I agree, they are asked to provide USNA verification of factual information and transcripts. Unless you attend a very small school, a counselor usually works with large numbers of students and probably has infrequent interaction with any one individual. You have to check your MOC website to see who they want letters of recommendation from. Each MOC runs their own process, but I doubt they would require recommendation from a h.s. counselor knowing they most likely have minimal interaction with the applicant. When you get to choose who you want a letter of recommendation from, you typically choose individuals who know you well enough to write a meaningful letter. Lots of older threads on that subject.

My son went to a civilian college, but his college counselor did write some sort of recommendation or answer a questionaire of sorts. She was responding to his overall behavior and perfromance throughout the four years in High school. And sure, she only met him Junior year
