I saw a thread on here from about a year ago talking about the 4 year NROTC scholarship not covering room and board at VMI. With the room and board being almost $10,000 I am trying to come up with options (other than FASFA) that can help cover that if I am awarded the National scholarship. What scholarships will be rescinded and which, if any, can be used to cover the room and board without me having to reach into my own pockets?

If your SAT is high enough you can apply for an institute scholarship.
That can potentially make it free to go to VMI if you combine it with a ROTC scholarship.

I know that when my son's Army ROTC scholarship kicked in, he lost the financial aid that he had Rat year. He took out the max loan - I think $7,500, towards room and board and we covered the rest. If I recall it was more around $12,000 a year. He paid the $7,500 and we paid around $2,500-$3,000 a semester.

Keep in mind with the ROTC Scholarship and Institute Scholar you have to retain an certain GPA to keep them. It is not always easy to maintain that and you must be sure you can come up with the money should you lose one or both. Not trying to be a downer but I saw it happen during my son's cadetship.

I was just going to mention this! For any other Rat, a 2.49 for the first semester isn’t too bad. However, they don’t round up to a 2.5 for the ROTC scholarship.

Now I’m on pins and needles during exam week hoping he doesn't perform poorly. ;)

I think I spent all 4 years on pins and needles - some semesters more so than others. LOL !!!!!!!!!!! Finally don't have to hold my breath anymore. All commissioned and serving his country
