As we all know, sports and ECA’s are a big part of a worthy candidate’s application. My DS is heading into Junior year. Wow, are things going to be different! Sports team practices already being affected, school is on-line e-learning.

There used to be a myth that the Chinese word for “crisis” is the same as the word for “opportunity.” While that is probably not true, I like the sentiment. We will be looking for opportunities to keep DS developing. There will be a lot of PT on our own, studying for SAT, writing essays, and looking for ways to lead fellow teamates and classmates through this mess. We would like to hear ideas from other future shipmates about how they are navigating high school in this crazy time.

P.S. - Every state is different. Hopefully yours is doing better than ours. We are in one of the worst.

I am a senior this year. All sports seasons were postponed until the spring, which makes it hard to get those varsity letters before the MOC nomination deadlines this October/November and the USNA application in January of next year.. As for non-athletic ECAs, I will be tutoring elementary grade students via Zoom meetings. Lots of applications to other colleges/scholarships to work on as well, so I should be pretty busy this year. Of course getting ready for the CFA also. I feel that keeping yourself busy is super important during this pandemic. Best of luck to your DS!

Sounds to me like candidates for class of ‘25 will have great material for essays. “How I overcame COVID crisis and turned it into an advantage...”.

EC Leadership opportunities - Sea Scouts BSA. Ages 14-21. They moved a lot of the meetings to zoom and continue to have outdoor activities with social distancing. Sailing, paddle sports, motor boats, scuba and coordination with Coast Guard Aux. (and separate contingents to Sea Base and Philmont). Their Quartermaster rank is much more rare than Eagle in traditional BSA. The offshore sailing coach and one of the chaplains at USNA were Sea Scouts. https://www.seascout.org/join
