This morning I saw something I wanted to share, but it didn’t fit well with the “mental floss family” of COVID threads, the ones focused on SA-ROTC related concerns, or the ones that were getting a bit testy and political. There is so much saturation in every aspect of our lives right now, but this struck a chord with me today.

I think there is room to post uplifting stories that have struck you in the same way, amidst our fun with memes and worries over impact on all things SA/ROTC, etc.

I watched that live and BAWLED...From the Midwest myself, farmers are special people. Salt of the Earth. The true spirit of sharing/caring/giving.

This just scratches the surface.

I will avoid taking “hipshots”. 95% of my clients are Midwestern farmers and/or ranchers. They’ve been getting hosed across the board since February 2017, beginning with the first ethanol blending waiver granted to Carl Icahn’s oil refinery. They lost their largest soybean market to the Brazilians. They are sitting on cattle for which there is no bid and are euthanizing hogs because the packing plants are shut, some indefinitely. As we speak, they are planting crops that will lose money. They are simply too busy to b/+*h and moan.

5 weeks ago, a client in SW NE called and let me know that if Mrs. cb7893 and I need a couple industrial face masks to let him know. They have enough to get through planting season. His offer was much appreciated, but as unremarkable as me giving him a good bottle of bourbon.

...and are euthanizing hogs because the packing plants are shut...

I know this is rather shallow, but I cannot help myself thinking of the loss on the bacon market.

Trust me. There is no humor too shallow, dark or irreverent for these folks.

Example: the client mentioned before is an avid backcountry skier and mountain guy. He and his wife spend much time in Colorado. When out there, especially in Boulder, she likes to wear a Tee shirt that says "I ❤ GLUTEN"

On the serious side. The sad part is that the Pork market was already under pressure when this hit. China failed to buy the amount expected following their outbreak of African Swine Fever. There is pork backed up in the system, including almost 80 mil. lbs of pork bellies in cold storage--more relatively than any other pork product. Bellies/bacon will not be as affected as the fresh market, mostly hams and loins. There is an adequate supply of product throughout the system all the way back to the producer who is euthanizing hogs. However, the packers are shutting down or slowing down the lines, as health and safety dictate. Several packers, Smithfield (Chinese) and JBS (Brazilian) were outright negligent in their management. They treat their employees, mostly poor Hispanic and African refugees the way they treat their workers back home. If you look at a county map of Covid-19 cases, the dark red counties in the middle of nowhere are where their plants are located. Tyson and Cargill were much more responsible. When Tyson plants were hit, they shutdown, deep cleaned, erected partitions and spaced the line workers. They also installed or are installing thermal scanners at the entrance to their plants across the country.

@THParent , I am keeping an extra couple of packages of bacon handy, but not for fear of the country running out during the pandemic. I keep it handy, because one can never anticipate an apocalypse.

I think bacon has the ability to infect every thread on SAF. In a benign way.

Yes, farmers are to the point of euthanizing hogs in my area. We could get 200+ pounds of pork for $250 if we just had the freezer space!

I am darned proud to call this lady a sister vet.
