COVID survivors banned from joining the military

I assume DOD is taking a very conservative, risk-averse approach at this stage. We don’t know enough about conferred immunity, short/medium/long-term effects on other major organ systems, etc.

It’s always easier to back off from more restrictive to less restrictive, develop definitions of severity and waiver guidelines.

As I think Matt Damon said (roughly paraphrased), in “The Martian,” “I have to science the hell out of this.”

Parallel thread in Off Topic, though I think this is the better home.

Mods - merge candidate?

Holy heck. I know they mentioned similar rules for SA appointees. But, would this mean current students would get kicked out if an outbreak occurred, similar to other permanent DQs? At least until they decide to allow waivers for it?

I was talking with hubby about this. Some would think “I won’t go to DR if I get it “? But...will they test to see if people had it? Via serology testing?

And goodness sakes...thousands do/will have it. This could be quite the hiccup in the pipelines.

There is no playbook for this. There will be plenty of good brains determining what’s best for the service, what’s best for the member.

There is a different and steeper standard applied BEFORE anyone enters the military for the first time. That’s what is being discussed in the military.com article.

Conditions, illnesses and diseases that occur AFTER processing into the military fall under a different set of guidelines that relate to the military member’s ability to perform in a full duty status. Sometimes they are the same DQ standard as the pre-military, sometimes not.

As said wisely above, BEFORE one enters the service the standards are different as are the requirements, and this is uncharted ground. Also try and consider, that once you are "officially in the service" if you develop an illness/disability it very well may be considered "Service Connected" for treatment, retirement, disability purposes. If you are AD, which includes recruits and academy students you are AD and if you get injured or develop a disability it could very well be a different situation and depending on the severity may result in PEB's or MEB's and a VA and retirement rating. Not that anything on those lines would be good for a young adult, but it may offer some protection if one gets Covid-19 and ends up with pulmonary or cardiac damage while serving.

*******I can assure you with 101% certainty.....INTERIM GUIDANCE regarding applicants to the military, enlisted or officer, that have been either clinically diagnosed or tested positive with COVID19 are......NOT permanently DQd for either of those corona virus statues...... Situationally dependent on a case-by-case basis, applicants may be DQd for a certain time period until certain criteria are met. The official policy ix expected to be published in te not too distant future***********

@MullenLE -- This sounds alarming and the source seems fairly credible (citing MEPCOM memo) ref C19 impact on enlistment. Any insights ref DODMERB policy on C19?

A quick search on Twitter shows reporters covering DoD are requesting more info from Pentagon. I would be very happy to learn that this is unsubstantiated / spurious!

I have always thought of the Military Times as credible. So this is rumor mill stuff? Will be interesting to see how it’s ll plays out.

Watch the Dr. Mikovits video - been banned by YouTube and other places.

It is on Facebook.

Dangerous stuff. It seems like we aren’t being told the truth.

If anyone here has this correct it is Mr. Mullen.
Thanks again for providing clarity, on this and other topics.

I came across this, can anyone verify? It’s from a story on DailyMail and I know we can’t trust everything we see there.
