Wondering if DS (incoming plebe) should get an account at the Navy Federal Credit Union? Have funds deposited in that account. That is what my DS at USNA has and a great credit card deal that came with it. I saw that there is a brick and mortar NFCU outside of WP. Are there usually NFCUs near or on bases for the Army? What did others do? Thanks!

There are NFCUs outside many Army bases, they are the closest thing to "all service" credit union that you can find. USAA is another option with wide spread locations. link below has Army base NFCU service locator

I also knew about the USAA option. Only that has no brick and mortar location which I've heard can sometimes make things a challenge.

Like many military members, I have USAA. Never needed a bricks and mortar location. ATM fees are covered at any ATM up to $X amount/month, which I have never exceeded. I do everything via app, website, phone call. I’ve called them from auto dealerships to tell them I’ve sold a car and to get coverage that day on a new one that I am driving XC on PCS to another state, and all I have is a zip code where I will be living. Never a problem.

And I also have NFCU, as do many military members. I occasionally need notary service or cash in specific denominations, such as for annual holiday tips or prior to travel when I need gratuity cash. Otherwise, I use their app, website and phone. Their car loans are great, as you wpukd expect of a large, successful credit union. And they have a car buying partnership with True Car which has an excellent discount program.

Both USAA and NFCU are prepared for pre-deployment arrangements, such as POAs to access accounts, auto bill pay, credit card with no foreign transaction fees, etc.

You can’t go wrong with either.

There is a USAA brick and mortar just outside the Thayer gate at West Point if that makes any difference.

Get a USAA account. You never have to go to the bank and can use any ATM--and be refunded for the fees. Also, mobile check depost.
USAA has my strongest endorsement.

Also, as a Gold Star Wife, when my husband died--USAA took care of us in ways that no normal bank takes care of newly widowed families.

Indeed, they have a Survivor Relations Team that takes care of every detail; the family doesn’t have to call around to different parts of USAA and retell a painful story. It’s an experienced, cross-trained bunch of representatives who are carefully chosen.

Between that and being able to have insurance on a US rental when we do not live in the US or have a car in the US—and that I have been banking with them for more than 30 years—and have never been into a ‘branch’ or any sort of office. (My home loan is through Navy Fed but the whole process I kept thinking, ‘USAA would have ore populated these forms.’ )

This! I've been a USAA member for 48 years and have never set foot in a USAA location. I started with just insurance but started banking with them in the 80's and today, all of my kids are members as well and all use USAA banking as well.

There is a USAA branch outside the Thayer Gate and an ATM at the PX.
They also understand military.

Other insurance company “You live in NY, your car is registered in TX, you have a TX driver license with a TN address???”
Me- “Yes.”
They didn’t like that. USAA? No problem.
