I'm currently a Sophomore in NROTC, but I'm considering Air Force as an option. I haven't spoken with my unit staff yet, I'm just trying to get an idea of what options are available if I decide to switch. I've always heard that cross-commissioning is extremely rare, but I couldn't even find anything about it online. Is it possible? This definitely isn't my first option, as I plan on applying for the scholarship, but I was just curious because I couldn't find much information on it. Any information of it would be really helpful. Thanks!

I've heard that its basically impossible from ROTC and that its a privilege reserved for Academy kids. That said it probably wouldn't hurt to look into it further if it really interested you. It might make your case more compelling if you could find someone in your commissioning year group that was in Air Force ROTC that wanted to cross commission into the Navy, and then make your case with a one-for-one trade. However it would probably be pretty challenging to locate another cadet, and even if you could you would still have to get both services to agree to it. All things being equal, don't count on anything. You would probably have a better chance of commissioning into the Navy and then asking for an inter-service transfer later on in your career.

I met a Navy LT last summer who cross commissioned from Army ROTC. He said he was the only one in the entire country that year who got it approved.
