Got a very brief phone call from our son who is currently at CLC telling us he was given a CTLT slot. Says he will fly out the day after graduation. Just curious how all of this works....

Did he tell you which unit, or which military base he is going to? The day after CLC graduation will be very tight....hopefully he'll have time to do laundry! Is your question about what CTLT is, or about the travel/orders?

Back in the day, I flew round trip to my CTLT from the airport closest to my home of record. Unless you guys live near his CLC location (Ft. Knox?), he'll want to make sure whoever is cutting his orders/arranging his travel (Cadet Command or his school's ROTC Battalion) does the multi-city ticket....Ft. Knox (Louisville or Cincinnati), to the destination, then return to Home of Record airport. Hopefully, your son also has access to a credit card....just in case everything goes sideways, he'll have access to credit to deal with hotels, rental cars and any other unexpected stuff.

We are in Louisville KY so fairly close. He will be going to Hawaii. Unfortunately he only has a debit card, no credit card and I don't think he has time to get one ...yikes.
Basically I was curious how he got a slot.... and how much of his expenses he will be responsible for.
He seems pleased to have the opportunity so we are too. I just have no idea what it is lol

how much of his expenses he will be responsible for.

All the necessities will be taken care of, he may need to purchase a few small thing. I remember my son needed a Maroon Beret and a Brass Dot to pin on the Beret and his uniform. He'll probably stay at the Schofield Inn on base and will either eat at the DFAC or use an allowance to eat.

Most of his personal expenses will be for things he does on free time, Snorkel Gear, surf board, boogie board, a Hawaiian shirt (a must), Shaved ice, more Shaved Ice and whatever else he can't live without.

A lot will depend on how much free time he has, which depends on the unit he's with. Tell your son to try and hitch a ride on a Helicopter while he's there, it's a beautiful view. Some cadets spend a lot of time in the field if the unit is training with not much free time, some have a lot of free time on the weekends if the unit is not in the field training, just depends on the timing.

When we were visiting my older son when he was stationed in Hawaii he had two cadets attached to him from CTLT, he was Aviation. The cadets had a lot of time to explore and went snorkeling with us a couple times.

Hope your son has a positive experience, they can learn a lot at CTLT and get a taste of the real Army.

Many cadets go straight from AC to CTLT. Fortunately you live close so you can bring him stuff. My son is going to a different base for CTLT but some things he was told to bring include: a valid military ID, identification tags, 4 complete sets of orders, 3 uniforms, PT uniform, off duty clothing, TA50, about $50 cash, and laptop.

Jcleppe knows whereof he speaks. Hawaii will be a great experience though Schofield Barracks is remote from almost everything else. A number of the soldiers in his platoon will be natives of the island. Officers don't fraternize with enlisted soldiers, but I wonder if it's different for cadets. There's a cheap bus from Schofield Barracks to Waikiki, in the event he can't get a ride, but it can take two hours to cover the 25 miles.

Make sure he has his driver's license in case he has to rent a car to see the island (anyone know if car rental agencies accept a debit card?).

I think the bigger challenge will be finding a car rental agency that will rent to someone under 25 years old.

Yes car rental agencies accept Mastercard or Visa debit. Purchases get processed the same way, only behind the scenes the credit card companies /banks either put the purchase on your credit card account or deduct it from your loaning institution's checking account.

As to minimum age, rental company policies do vary. Some won't rent to under 25s and others will, charging a premium. Most major companies will rent to service members under 25 on orders, which Adam(?) will be on while he is in Hawaii.

Why rent? Can't he just Uber? Our son leaves for Belvoir and CTLT the day after AC graduation. He'll just Uber if he wants to get anywhere.

IIRC - some agencies will allow rentals if you show orders. I was looking in to this before, granted a long time ago.

In my case, I had an Army internship with NVESD last summer at Ft. Belvoir and was provided a rental car (granted this was already setup ahead of time in DTS).
