CULP assignments are coming out...

Jcleppe, you referenced this: can you please tell me what it is?

300.00 CLIP money

Thanks.

CLIP is Critical Language Incentive Pay. Rotc Cadets can take certain languages at school and after passing the class with at least a C get paid. My son did this a few semesters with Arabic.

If you go here to this link, you will be able to read about it as well as the list of languages.

I'm impressed. Arabic isn't easy. DS struggled through two semesters before giving up for the present. Plan now is to let the military pay for it if he/they need it. I still have fun though, asking him how to say hummus in Arabic.

CLIP-B is indeed Critical Language Incentive Pay-Bonus. It is not for all languages, but those classified at this time (it changes from year to year, sometimes after the fact) as critical. Arabic is one. I think I heard Russian was one, then all of a sudden last year it wasn't, so didn't get CLIP-B pay unexpectedly.

The CLIP-B pay as I recall ranges from $100 per semester Unit, to $250 per semester unit, depending on language. The HR administrator arranges the request with PMS signature signifying a passing grade. Some don't know how to do it, and have to research it.

CLIP is paid at 100.00 to 250.00 per credit hour per semester. My son took a 5 credit Arabic class for one semester and received 1250.00 CLIP.

Oddly enough, I wasn't selected this year. I was selected for Kazakhstan last year but the mission was canceled just days before the report date so we never got to go. It's strange that they didn't select me this year, since I already completed the requirements to deploy last summer. They have all my med paperwork, passport, etc. Plus I'm a 300, so this is my last chance to go. Luck of the draw I suppose. The good news is that it frees up time for Air Assault!

My son just found out today that he'll be going to Guyana in June 2014 for a month. No details on what 'type' of assignment this one will be.

My battalion had a cadet go last summer, and ill ask her if she knew of any other Guyana missions. She ended up doing a military to military contact and did some pretty neat stuff in jungle survival.

My son wishes he could have kept up with Arabic as he enjoyed it. He took two semesters and got an A both semesters but with it being a 5 credit, 5 day a week class he just didn't have the time. Other classes and all of his ROTC commitments came first.

Are Passports not issued by the Army anymore for CULP?

This will require a government passport, not a civilian one. CULP should be providing forms or instructions on this, and there is likely to be an HR person in your battalion who can assist you.

passport info on culp acknowledgement

PASSPORTS & VISAS (1 JANUARY)
Travel document requirements for each country are listed on the DOD PASSPORT MATTERS website at https://secureapp2.hqda.pentagon.mil/passportmatters/. In order to attend this Culture and Language training event in ROMANIA you must have a MILITARY ID CARD AND NATO TRAVEL ORDERS (NON-REIMBURSIBLE STANDARD TOURIST (BLUE) PASSPORT IS RECOMMENDED FOR OFFICIAL IDENTIFICATION AND OFF DUTY TRAVEL).. Each training mission’s visa requirements are based upon agreements with the host country. A visa is NOT REQUIRED for your event. The instructions for applying for an OFFICIAL PASSPORT & VISA are listed on ROTC Blackboard under the OFFICIAL PASSPORT tab. US Army Cadet Command policy is that no Cadet will travel without the Travel documents required by the DOD Foreign Clearance guide. If you currently do not have the required travel documents, you must apply for them by 1 JANUARY 2014.

This does sound correct. A no fee Goverment passport was the way to go in past years.

If you've never had a passport before this process gets a little trickier because you have to be present in person which means you need an appointment. Depending on where you go to school it could be weeks before there is an appointment opening in your area. DS was actually considering driving hours to another location to make this work timely; this was after he spent hours trying to find a time and place that worked into his schedule. And let's just say this is the shortened version of the situation.:shake:

I asked the passport question to DS. He said they were hauling everyone to a nearby Air Force base to have them made, so I was assuming they were the gov't passports that were required.

That's a shame.

Maybe

That's a shame.

You wouldn't believe the way he can navigate because of situations like this. He literally found post offices, people, taxis, travel times and distances in another state (between athletic competitions) to attempt to get this done. The real shame is that half the time no one answers the phone when you attempt to make an appointment. He told me after a similar situation, "I know I have the skills to lead."

As I recall you need to have original birth certificate for passport and this can hold people up as well.

So, assuming I've never been north of Tennessee in my life (aside from a 5 day NASS trip a while ago), this'll be an enlightening experience?

CULP assignment

DS -MS 1-Kosovo mid July for a month. He said his battalion's CULP assignments were to a variety of places. He's very happy to have been selected.
