CULP assignments are coming out...

We've been away for the holidays. DS checked email today and found that he was sent an email Monday from cadet command offering a CULP assignment in Mongolia. (He didn't ask for a particular area. Said he would go anywhere)

The email said that he must respond in 3 days. Today would be the fourth day. He responded the minute he opened the email. He even called cadet command project manager for CULP to discuss the matter about being late due to the holidays. He/she wasn't there, so he wasn't able to speak with anyone. Did leave a voicemail. We are crossing our fingers that he will be accepted. What do you guys think? (with the holidays and all?)

I just got an email the other day saying I had stuff due the 15th of November. I think you'll be fine considering I didn't even know I was selected until a month after alot of this stuff was due.

Well the email actually stated this too:

"we have not received your acknowledgement of acceptance which was due on 15 november.

The email was sent Monday, Dec. 23rd. So we were hoping that the short time lapse wouldn't be a problem since it wasn't offered before Nov. 15.

Another question. Someone earlier said their mission was cancelled last year. How frequent does this occur (canceling missions)?

Seems like there are some that are cancelled each year either because it's become a hot spot or the folks at the other end had to cancel for some reason. Stuff happens. You just go ahead and prepare like you are going and hope it doesn't happen.

Someone should research whether or not one receives CULP OML credit if their trip is cancelled, I doubt it but you never know....

DD did CULP summer of 2012. Her mission did not get cancelled, but the destination did change two times after the initial announcement. Tell your cadets to pay careful attention to those official CULP related emails - the first time DD's destination changed, she missed it because the email otherwise looked identical to the first one

I went on a CULP mission to Mongolia last summer. It was an amazing experience and after talking to cadets on other trips, a very unique experience. We participated in a U.N. Exercise with something like 13 or 14 other nations.

Awesome! I did some research earlier and found info about the summer 2013 trip to Mongolia. DS was excited with what he read and is so looking forward to it.

Would it be ok if he sent you a PM?

Absolutely! Have him PM me and I would be more than happy to share my experiences.

I immediately thought of you and your son this morning when I saw a story on the internet about the dreaded Mongolian Death Worm. It is also known as the "olgoi khorkhoi", though that phrase doesn't seem to inspire the same degree of horror as MDW. It is described as bright red, 2-5 feet in length, and it spits a corrosive yellow substance that will cause death. It can also emit similarly fatal electric charges. They live underground and surface in June and July, probably for golf season.

Although a great deal has been written about them, nobody has ever seen one or any evidence of their existence. Even so, if he could keep his eyes open and rassle one into a gunnysack while on his CULP mission, it would probably keep your back yard free of gators.

Way to put their minds at ease Parent Delahanty! Truly a fortune awaits the super human who wrestles one into a gunny sack! Methinks Sasquatch would have trouble hiding in the Gobi so some enterprising Grandpa came up with the Mongolian Death Worm to both get the grandkids to behave and entertain! In fact I wonder if it wasn't you on one of your many fossil hunting trips to the Gobi?

OMG!!!!!!!:eek: Wikipedia reports like it exists with no proof.. Like kinnem states he would be popular if he could wrestle one in his gunnysacks, although it would be half his size, probably peek out from now and then. And I bet it could help with the mosquito population:shake:

While I hope that is the case, I really doubt it. My mission was canceled two days before our report date last year and I haven't heard anything about getting OML credit for it.

Found out this week I'll be going on CULP as the XO of an Africa mission. Should be fun, I'll be spending around 3 months in country.

Congratulations Bull! It should be a fun summer with lots of learning as well. Do you commission this spring and therefore this ties you over to BOLC? Or do you still have some academics to wrap up in the fall?

I'm not doing what MS2's on CULP do, Cajun. I'm a mission XO. So each country has a mission commander, if it's big enough an XO, then individual teams and additional support (DLI, TCC, etc). I'm a mission XO, so I will be coordinating between the teams and the embassy to resource for training, among other things. I will be in country the entire time we have teams in country, which is where the 3 months comes from.

I actually just got off a conference call with Ft Knox and an embassy in Africa.

I'll be an MSV next semester. Knee surgery helped to delay that

A great opportunity for you, Bull. While the teams are there, will you be spending your time with them?
