CULP assignments are coming out...

I'm not doing what MS2's on CULP do, Cajun. I'm a mission XO. So each country has a mission commander, if it's big enough an XO, then individual teams and additional support (DLI, TCC, etc). I'm a mission XO, so I will be coordinating between the teams and the embassy to resource for training, among other things. I will be in country the entire time we have teams in country, which is where the 3 months comes from.

I actually just got off a conference call with Ft Knox and an embassy in Africa.

I'll be an MSV next semester. Knee surgery helped to delay that

Awesome!!!! I didn't realize that they had positions like that for MSIV. I'm sure you will have a blast!! Congrats:smile:

A great opportunity for you, Bull. While the teams are there, will you be spending your time with them?

I'll be around them some when were able to get out, but primarily I'll be tracking multiple teams (when they hit Knox, travel, arrive in country, depart, hit Knox, and get back home) and coordinating everything they'll need to do what they do. So it will just depend

Edit to add: Cajun, I'm not sure how much they advertise it, if any. The only way I found out about it is that the mission commander, who is the MS4 instructor at my school asked me if I wanted to do it. I would've never known it existed had he not. You also don't apply like normal CULP'ers. Once I told the commander yes, then I went to the CULP site to apply (so my name was in the system) and he called Cadet Command to look out for my application. Then they just accept it and place me as the XO. I don't think you can just apply to CULP for this role, it takes some behind the scenes stuff.

Now I have a bunch of extra stuff to get done on top of my already busy schedule... fun fun. Even though my role is different, I still get CULP credit for accessions and the CLIP stuff.

I definitely don't have all (or many) the answers, but if anyone has questions about the behind the scenes side of CULP or why something happens (i.e last second switch of mission) I may be able to help. Sitting on some of these conference calls with all of the people involved that make these trips happen sheds light on the process. Or if you're going to Africa, you can PM me.

DS is a MSI. I will definitely keep this in mind for him in the coming years. Thanks and remember to share your experience with us. Would love to hear it.

Due to waiting for a medical waiver and the government shut down I was not able to get and an application until late November due to contracting. My MS instructor told me that there is going to be a second board for CULP in the upcoming month or two. Does anyone with some insight know more about that or preferably a more specific time frame that they would be releasing slots?

The 2nd board was last Friday.

I doubt any other selections will be happening. We're already passing suspense dates to have things completed. With a good number of cadets needing passports (official and non-official) they can't wait too long.

I do know they were evening out some of the missions so if you get switched at the last minute don't be too surprised.

There WAS another board sometime last week according to my cadre. Something like 300 kids for 700 slots remaining.

At this late date I would highly doubt there are 700 slots still open for CULP.

300 open slots still seem unlikely, that would be around a quarter of the mission. With all the deadlines that go along with CULP adding a group that large at this late date would be tough.

Notice how my post said ANY OTHER. Whatever board apparently occurred last week is not what I'm talking about, though I highly doubt 300 additional slots were just assigned. It's getting a little too late in the game for that.

Just letting you know what the cadre are telling the cadets. Speculate all you want.

Considering I'm serving as the XO for a CULP mission this summer, I appreciate it, but I don't need to speculate anything. It's really not worth my time to care how many CULP slots there are. But they're not going to be giving out more CULP slots from here on, they're out of time.

Bull, quick question. DS was selected to go to Romania this summer for CULP. He has his order # but not much else. He has contacted his HR person and the Major in charge of the team but no further info yet. Is this normal? Thanks.

Not to worry - it's still early. Some missions take longer to coalesce than others. Also, occasionally the PMS assigned to head the mission may bow out and be replaced. As he's been selected, then the appropriate people are aware of your son's existence.

Has a time frame for the mission been established?

Thanks for the quick reply.Looks like he is scheduled to leave for Ft. Knox on 05/31, be there for a few days and them off to Romania.

Hold tight, it is still early.

For my mission, Only the mission commander, XO, and 1 team leader slot has been filled. We're still waiting on the rest of the cadre to come on board.

Once his mission commander gets his bearings (and he/she may be changing) he should contact the cadets to make sure they're all on track to complete the pre-deployment requirements.

If your DS is in a holding pattern and wondering what he could be doing, have him go to his blackboard account (rotc.blackboard.com) and access the CULP tab. It has a list of pre-deployment requirements and training he should complete. He'll be able to check and see what exactly he needs to complete based on the country he's visiting. If he has to take SERE-100, AT Level 1, or ISO Prep, he can go ahead and start now, and he should because they are long and boring, but I believe the deadline for completing those is approaching soon.

Also, if he needs to get an Official (red) passport, all of the forms he will need can be accessed through there. DS form 11, DS form 82, and DD 1056.

He most likely won't be able to get a CAC card (which he'll need) until he has orders in hand and is 45 days out from them. He can check on his immunizations to, there is a link on the CULP tab on blackboard.

Anything else, feel free to ask.

This is not a knock on you at all, just an example before it happens accidentally, but troop movements are kept tight because bad people like to do bad things in bad places. Sheriff was correct by not stating the day his DS will be leaving CONUS and arriving in Romania. Just in case any other parent is told from there DS/DD what day they leave and arrive in-country, that type of info is best kept to yourself, even if you don't think it will be an issue.

Always safer to speak vaguely in these situations.

Found out this morning that I am going to Romania this summer. Army told me that there were 913 applications looked at for the second board and 225 slots given out. Found out through my personal email that I had given through the application.
