This may seem trivial but this site has been so helpful in the past I figured I’d ask anyway. Has anybody had experience with CULP in Guatemala. If so do you know if WiFi is a available when they are at the military academy? DS will be going in July and while I don’t expect frequent communication the occasional text would be appreciated. It’s crazy expensive to add to our cell plan and haven’t had much luck finding a decent SIM card that we could buy in advance. Sounds like they are inexpensive to buy once you are there but would doubt he’d have an opportunity to do so... thanks

My son did Central American deployments two straight years and he bought burner phones both times. When he was in the Middle East we used What’s App Messenger which worked just fine.

Thanks. I would have no problem with him buying a burner phone but they are scheduled pretty much down to the minute so not sure he’ll get an opportunity to do so (if he did have an opportunity he could probably buy a local SIM card too...) Also to use WhatsApp he’d still need WiFi. If he has WiFi we are fine as we all have iPhones so can send iMessages. Just not sure if he’s going to have access to WiFi. Any thoughts?

I’ll think about it for a bit.

@gill0610 , you may be surprised at the availability of WIFI in Guatemala. Remember it is much easier and cheaper to build out a digital wireless network than it is to lay out copper wire. Besides most of the rest of the lesser industrialized world operates on sim cards. The Guatemalan Cadets will surely be wired.

Congratulations to your DS! He should make sure he takes full advantage of Spanish speaking opportunities.

Good to know. In that case I will probably just activate the international feature on his phone and tell him to only use it if it’s an emergency and he doesn’t have WiFi. We can iMessage and FaceTime on WiFi. Verizon offers a $10/day option that you only get charged for on the days you use it...
He is very grateful for the opportunity.
