I'd second project go. You can be an absolute beginner for some of the programs and the languages are the ones most people find hard. Also you don't have to transfer the grades back to your home school in order to participate so there's little to no downside.
The other thing you may have him try are some of the undersubscribed internships. There are a whole bunch of new ones this year - your son can find them in the ROTC blackboard (or pm me if you want and I can send you the list). Don't pay any attention to the fact they say preference is given to MSIIIs - just don't have him apply to the really popular ones. Try the new broadcasting ones, CPPIP, Museum Internship. If he tailors his essay to his top choice and really expresses an interest then there is a good shot he could get one.... and if he doesn't he is at least familar with the process of putting together a resume, letters of recommendations, and an essay so when next year roles around he will be ahead of the game.
