I will applying next year to USNA and USMMA. I'm just curious how the DodMERB process works. At what point can I start the process? How does the process work? For medical history do you fill out a form or do you send in all medical records you've accumulated from dermatologist, pediatrics, etc.?

The "process" begins when you begin your application to the academy. After you complete a certain portion, the academy will forward your name to DODMETS to schedule your physcial exam and eye exam.

They (DODMETS or Concorde, the contractor) will send you a postcard with instructions to contact a locally chosen physician to schedule your complete physical exam.

Before you go to your exam, you will fill out a complete medical history form (click here for the form) and bring it with you. After the exam, the doctor will forward his results to DODMERB where a determination will be made on your medical qualification status. You will not need to send in any records unless they are requested. This is known as a "remedial" and it can involve sending in records, or it can involve further medical testing.

Good Luck!

I've got a couple of questions about what exactly should be marked "Yes" on the medical history form, and though Mr. Mullen will likely just ask to have an email shot his way, I figure a few people may wonder about this.

First, alcohol is a choice under "have you ever or do you now use any of the following," and I think the last time, and really only time I had alcohol was champagne on New Years about 2 years ago (I don't even have it now for celebrations - really just don't care for it). Does that count?

Second, when I was in first or second grade I had a stye on my eye. Didn't last very long, but did go to the doc to get it checked out. Would I check Yes under Eye Trouble for that?

Third, this one's actually just a note to myself since basically what's here is what's going on the form. No need to address it  Fractured left pinky playing football in gym in third grade. Had a cast/splint placed on it. No deformities, no effects on performance.

This last one I'm curious about because it seems like everyone would answer Yes. Had any injury or illness other than those already noted?

Does that include whenever I've been sick from a stomach ache/virus, etc? Or a sprained ankle/other minor injury where ice was the cure? I would assume that they mean something more serious, but the way it's asked seems pretty broad.

Also, my exams are in the last week of March when I'm off from school, since that's really the only time I have to do it (I'm either otherwise committed or have to wear contacts within the three day minimum before going for the eye exam, so that week is the only time). I'm just wondering if for any reason that will cause any timing conflicts with everything going through. For example, the Air Force doesn't officially give me the scholarship until the medical is good, and there's a deadline on when I can accept the scholarship offer, right? I'm not sure how that little process goes, so any input is useful.

Preparation for Dodmerb

Can anyone offer advice as to how we can get a jump start on preparing for the Dodmerb process? My son has a verbal that he has received Marine Corp option NROTC scholarship but we have not received anything in the mail as of yet. With the May 1 deadline approaching we would like to do whatever we can to be best prepared for when we received the paperwork. We know he will need to go through the remedial process for a couple of past injuries. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The great thing about this forum is that Mr. Mullen will be there to help you through the process. When you do end up in the system (he'll be better be able to check your files then), I'd suggest you send him an email (his address is all over the place) with your son's name and last 4 of SSN.

In the mean time, since you mention past injuries, I'd recommend retrieving copies of all related records (physicial, hospital, PT - if necessary) related to the injuries. You may be required to send them in (always keep a spare copy in case of mail issues). If your son has turned 18 (like goaliegirl has), he will need to retrieve them himself OR will have to sign papers for release of medical records to you (the joys of HIPPA laws). This was the biggest obstacle we've faced so far.

Best of Luck.

I'm sure Mr. Mullen will be chiming in soon...

Does the DoMERB exam cost?
Also, Mr. Mullen, do we schedule the exam once we get the real application (applying for class of 2015, i hear app is avalible in June/early July) or should we already be on this ball?
thanks in advance
