Hey, I'm currently halfway done with my second semester being in AROTC at a public university. I would love to answer any questions anyone has about my experiences. This was my plan B after not receiving an appointment from USMA and so far I am loving it.

I just got a 3 year AROTC scholarship and I'm wondering what pt is like?

Hi! I also just got a 3 year Army ROTC Scholarship. Do you know of any scholarships I could apply for that will cover the gap year?

I'm a current MS2 in AROTC. PT is going to depend on your unit a lot.

My school does PT 3 days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). We will do a preparation drill, a workout created by the MS3's, and then the recovery drill. You can look up what the prep drill and recovery drill look like as they are doctrinal (the same across the whole Army).

You will almost certainly do the prep drill and recovery, but the workout itself will depend on your school. More often than not, it is calisthenics rather than lifting. You'll also do ruck marches every now and then.

You will need to go to the gym and work out on your own time in addition to PT.

Be sure you contact your school financial aid department and ask about any special programs for 3 year winners. Some schools may offer free room/board, others may give you a tuition break for year 1. Your ROO should also be a helpful resource.

Graduating debt free is a high impact benefit. Your salary as an O-1 goes a lot further when you don't have to pay back student loans.

What were your stats in high school?

My DS reached out to the ROO and was told that they had nothing to offer at this point, but said there may be AROTC scholarships upgraded to a 4 year after the 3rd board later this month.

Back in 2015, my DS was a "walk-on" to Army ROTC at his regional state university. By the beginning of the 2nd semester he earned a 3 year AD scholarship which was then upgraded to 3.5 year.

Now times have changed, and the number of campus based scholarships has been reduced, but it still may be possible! Worst case scenario is you get a non-scholarship contract and still commission as a 2LT.

Oh, my DS has a 3 year that he is very excited about. We hoped maybe the ROO would say sure, we can cover the 1st year! But we'll see what happens after the 3rd board. We can cover the 1st year without debt beyond the $5,500 loan he will take, unless his summer job yields enough to cover it.

What's been your greatest challenge so far? Favorite aspect?

My DS is opting for AROTC at a SMC because he wants that lifestyle and the activities that come along with it (drill team, color guard, etc.). He's still waiting on a decision from USMA, but has a great plan B with a 3 year AROTC to his first-choice school.

Sorry for such a delayed response. PT at my school is three days a week for those who pass the ACFT and five days a week for those who don't. We have our PT days on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and they are from 0600 - 0700. Generally, regular PT days focus on two of the events of the ACFT and we do exercises and movements to help with those events. Then the next day we would focus on a different ACFT event and do exercises for that event, etc. Sometimes we have rec PT which is ultimate frisbee or dodgeball. My personal opinion is that it is not too difficult.

I currently do not know any scholarships that cover that first year. My school's Army ROTC program does a good job in covering those costs for the 3-year scholarship winners. We are really fortunate to have such a financially supportive school. However, I'm not sure if other programs help cover the first-year cost but I would maybe do some research or ask about it. If anything I would say apply for academic scholarships through the school or local scholarships back home.

What were your stats in high school?
Academically I maintained a 4.4 weighted GPA, 40/530 in my class, had a 28 on the ACT and 1350 on SAT, took 1 AP my junior year and 4 APs my senior year.

In athletics, I was a four-year letter winner for both cross country and basketball and lettered once in track my freshman year. I was a captain for the Varsity basketball team my junior and senior year as well as won some awards for those sports.

Extracurricular wise I was in National Honors Society my senior year, was in a Girls Leadership Club for community service, did a program where myself and my classmates would travel to our district's elementary schools and teach kids about different topics like mental health, alcohol and drugs, etc, I was a peer tutor, and was in Girls' State (got canceled due to covid).

Good luck to your DS about USMA. My dream school was always West Point and my plan B was AROTC which I was fortunate to be awarded a 3-year scholarship. Plan B became my main plan after my medical waiver didn't go through with West Point and now I'm here

I would say my greatest challenge so far for me personally is my confidence in military tactics. However, only being a freshman I feel that I will definitely gain more knowledge and become more confident as I continue through the program. So realistically my greatest challenge isn't too bad.

My favorite aspect is that I have built-in best friends. I feel a lot of freshman or new college students have trouble making and keeping friends when they first get to college. The fact that AROTC essentially makes you hang out and be with or around your classmates and peers constantly creates that friendship and bond that many people do not get to experience.

Some schools will cover your first year as an incentive, you just won’t get the stipend and book pay until you contract.

My Son is transferring to Sac State in the fall and will do AROTC there. He has an interview for the campus base scholarship. They told him it’s tough to get. Why have they been reduced?

Funding has been decreased, presumably a reflection of what the Army considers its mission needs going forward.
