Current Doolie, Ask Away

Rated=10years. Also, for Pilot that is after you get your wings not after you graduate.
Thanks, but not really my question. In the case where a cadet is forced into a rated position, can the Air Force still require the 10 years?

Absolutely. The person going through UPT could wash out on purpose though and be told what other non rated job they were being sent to that doesn’t incur a 10 year commitment.

Might be incorrect, but I was under the impression that you cannot be volun-told for a rated career. Any informed insights?

CSO, ABM, and RPAs are rated but only incur a 6-year commitment. Pilots incur 10.

Extremely unlikely to drop pilot or any rated if you didn't want it. Even so, I've heard from people cases in the past where people were forced into rated positions but to my knowledge this situation doesn't happen now. If you didn't put pilot on your dream sheet and are selected pilot, you can give that slot to someone else. But yes, if you were somehow forced into pilot you'd get the 10 years.

Hi all,
Current doolie at USAFA here. I remember where I was around this time last year - the anxiety, checking my application portal every 30 seconds, etc. Looking for updates and asking questions on this forum really helped me out. If you have any random questions that don't need their own thread, ask them here and I'll do my best to answer them.
Is it a good idea to get my boots sprayed with a water repellant product, or will they get too hot? Will they get wet in Jack's Valley? Thanks.

I wouldn't. Waterproofing boots wouldn't help you in Jack's because your boot will get fully submerged. All the waterproofing would do is keep it in! You'll get another pair of issued boots even if you arrive with a pair. My recommendation would be to wear those boots when you're in Jack's cause they'll get pretty nasty.

Thank you, you mean wear the new issued boots in Jack's or wear the good boots I will be bringing with me in Jack's?

What are the rifle and handgun requirements for the course done during BCT?

My kid said they fired the M4 only in BCT and only a few hundred rounds. Lot different than the Army!

Definitely the issued in Jack's. They'll likely be uncomfortable and make your feet hurt some, but at least you won't ruin your good boots.

I heard you'll have a better chance to get a UPT slot if you were on the flying team. Is that accurate? I also heard that UPT slots are down this year because of a training backlog or something along that line. A few Doolies are discouraged and are thinking of switching to other branches.

I'm starting soaring in March which is the earliest doolies can start it. To do this you need to finish AV-100 in A or B go, you'll learn what go's are later but basically they're tiny bits of the semester to schedule short classes in. There was only 70 slots for spring soaring for doolies this semester. Regular soaring and powered flight are in the summer and you have to submit preferences for them. Get above a 3.0 you're first semester and I think you'll basically be guaranteed a slot in either.
What does AV-100 in A or B mean? So there are 70 slots available for soaring in March, what about summer? How many programs are you allowed to do in the Summer? Thanks.

AV-100 is a 10-lesson course where you learn the basics of flying (literally the basics...very simple basics) using virtual reality. I thought it was a cool experience. Very easy too. I think the technical name is Aviation 100 / Intro to Powered Flight Ops. It's required to complete before you take any airmanship opportunities. Look up the USAFA COI handbook, you can find more info about it in there.

I wore my good boots all of jack’s (including the assault course) and I definitely recommend doing that. It’s all about personal preference, but I felt it was more important to be comfortable. I am still wearing the same boots and they don’t look super worn.

Only about 9 doolies are accepted on the Flying team, and 400-500 receive pilot slots. Will it help? Absolutely, but It's certainly not necessary.

Issued boots are a blessing in Jack's. I wore both there, but you don't want to ruin your good boots that you have to wear in the Ac year

It is true, but not very common unless your a standout they think will do well in the position.
